[PRpond, X1379]

Saturday, the weather is going to be about 25 degrees in South Lake Tahoe when the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office's own, Deputy DeLeon, Sgt Seligsohn, Correctional Officer Foster, and Sheriff's Technician Smithcamp, will participate in the Polar Plunge. The team formed after meeting Jack, a Special Olympian, who is planning to plunge with the EDSO team.

The team is looking for support, and donations, for the Special Olympics. You can read more about it at the link below. We wish you luck during your frigid swim in Lake Tahoe.

"Perfect weather for a swim?" asks the team.

"We hope you will join our team and help us raise funds for Special Olympics.

Yes it takes a lot of guts to jump in the chilly waters of Lake Tahoe in the middle of winter, but we're crazy enough to do it. Are you? You can dip your big toe or your whole body, it is completely up to you.

Plunging not your thing? Register as a chicken and you can still be a part of our team. You'll be excused from plunging but not all the fun we'll have.

Everyone who raises a minimum of $125 will receive a polar plunge long sleeved t-shirt and free admittance to the post plunge party immediately after the plunge.

Come on! You can do it! Wet or dry, take the plunge with us for Special Olympics!

---
Michael Seligsohn  TEAM CAPTAIN
$956.00 Raised    12 Donations Received

Call me crazy, but on March 17, 2018, I am going to "Feel the Thrill of the Chill" by taking a quick dip in the chilly waters of Lake Tahoe to raise money for Special Olympics.  I'm hoping I can count on you to support my fundraising efforts.   The funds I raise will help change the lives of children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them the confidence they need to be successful in life.

If you prefer to mail in your donation instead of using your credit card, please click here to print out the form to mail in with your gift.

Every dollar counts and whatever you can give will be very much appreciated.

If you'd like to join me, visit www.iPolarPlunge.com or www.iPolarPlungeNV.com to register.

[Lt Shannon Laney, SLTPD. Image: Robert Choate Jr]

South Lake Tahoe, CA (March 14, 2018) - On March 12, 2018 at about 10:00 pm, South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) dispatch received a 911 call of a possible disturbance and gunshot in the 3700 block of Aspen Ave. SLTPD Officers responded to that area to attempt to locate the source of the gunshot and disturbance. While officers were on scene, the victim in this case came to the police department to report the incident. It was discovered that the victim and suspect, Robert Choate Jr, 34- year-old South Lake Tahoe resident, were roommates. The victim learned that Choate had been stealing from him so he was in the process of kicking Choate out. During a confrontation between the victim and Choate, Choate pulled a shotgun out and pointed it at the victim. The victim wrestled Choate for the shotgun, during which the shotgun discharged. The victim was able to get the shotgun away from Choate and brought it to the police department to report the incident.

Detectives from SLTPD were called out to the scene. Through their investigation, they learned that Choate may be staying at a Stateline area hotel. Believing that Choate may possess other firearms, Detectives set up surveillance on the hotel and waited for Choate to leave his room. This morning, March 14th, at about 9:30 am, SLTPD Detectives took Robert Choate into custody without incident.

Suspects in Fatal Cedar Grove Stabbing Arrested in Carson City

[EDSO Sergeant Anthony Prencipe]

The following are the booking photographs of the men arrested on Wednesday regarding the fatal stabbing in Cedar Grove.

Both men are in custody in Carson City under felony warrants.

March 12, just after 4pm, the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office was called regarding a stabbing on Pony Express Trail in Cedar Grove. When deputies arrived, 42 year old Jeremy Fortuin of Pollock Pines, was found with multiple injuries. Live saving efforts were attempted by deputies on scene until medics arrived, who continued with medical aid. Unfortunately, Jeremy did not survive his injuries.

Witness interviews provided information into the altercation. This lead to our request for assistance in locating Johnny Ring. Johnny Ring, and another witness, were found, interviewed, and later released.

Information gathered during the investigation lead to arrest warrants being issued for 19 year old Chase Bomar and 21 year old Cody Bomar, out of Pollock Pines. Chase and Cody were found to have fled to Nevada. With the assistance of Carson City SWAT, EDSO Detectives were able to locate and arrest Chase and Cody. Both have since been arrested on murder charges.

Next of kin notification has been made. At this time, there is no request by EDSO for assistance in the investigation or any other outstanding persons. Booking photographs of Cody and Chase will be released when we have them.

[World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series]

PLACERVILLE CA – March 17, 2018 – The World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series continues to battle rain in the West, now forced to postpone next Wednesday’s Brad Sweet Placerville Short Track Showdown to September, when the Series returns to California for the Fall West Coast Swing.

“It’s an early call, but it’ll take the track at least five days of sun to dry out,” said Sweet after days of intermittent rain in Placerville, CA. The event was originally scheduled for Wednesday, March 21. The marquee event, which attracts some of the best drivers in the country each year, will be postponed to Wednesday, September 12, between the Gold Cup Race of Champions at Silver Dollar Speedway and the Wine Country Outlaw Showdown at Calistoga Speedway.

Tickets for Wednesday’s event will be honored at the September rain date. Questions should be addressed to the World of Outlaws ticket office at 844-DIRT-TIX, Monday through Friday, 9am-5pm EST. The Series continues its West Coast Swing at Ocean Speedway and Bakersfield Speedway next weekend.

George W. Peabody: The Deep Blue Load of Spanish Hill

“The Deep Blue Load” of Spanish Hill – Part 1

The El Dorado Historical Society presents historian George Peabody telling the story of the “mountain of gold” found in Placerville, CA.

Millions of dollars worth of gold were mined from the “Deep Blue Load”. One of the richest of several tributaries that fed the main Tertiary channel is the “Deep Blue” lead.

This ancient channel first appears at Georgia Hill, northwest the Toombs Ranch. It then heads south, passing southwest of the ranch, before crossing White Rock Creek, and dipping under the volcanic rocks near Lava Cap Winery. It then emerges from beneath the cap and continues south to Three Mile House at Smith’s Flat, about three miles from Placerville on the old Carson Valley Highway. The Deep Blue then crosses Hangtown Creek, swings southwest, passing north of Texas Hill, and ends near Spanish Hill about 1½ miles southeast of Placerville, Escaton Village is built on the site of Spanish Hill.

Cities and Counties: On the Front Lines of Homelessness

[Matt Cate and Carolyn Coleman]

Of all the problems our state and local governments are trying to solve, homelessness is among the most important and challenging. To that end, the League of California Cities and the California State Association of Counties released a report last week from our joint homelessness task force. This group of local officials met for more than a year to explore the major causes and identify effective local programs. The report details state and federal resources that local governments can leverage to create a path to housing and self-sufficiency.

Solving homelessness is costly and complex, but the financial and societal costs are far greater if we do not tackle this issue now. In recent months we have seen a hepatitis outbreak in San Diego and destructive wildfires in Los Angeles linked to people trying to live without the sanitary and cooking facilities most of us take for granted.

To that end, the League of California Cities and the California State Association of Counties released a report last week from our joint homelessness task force. This group of local officials met for more than a year to explore the major causes and identify effective local programs. The report details state and federal resources that local governments can leverage to create a path to housing and self-sufficiency.

The report also notes that mental illness and drug abuse can cause homelessness, but housing and health care costs, job loss and other life-changing events are also factors. There is no one-size-fits-all solution, which is why effective local programs are also diverse.

With a housing voucher program in Marin County, a streamlined process to approve temporary shelters in San Jose, an outreach team in Anaheim and tiny-home communities in Yuba County and Fresno, local governments are thinking outside the box. They are finding ways to get people into shelters, into programs that address the causes of their homelessness and eventually into permanent homes.

The report finds that flexibility is a key factor. An approach that works well in an urban core may not have the same impact in a rural community. Collaboration is also crucial among cities, counties, community groups and nonprofits.

As the Legislature and Gov. Jerry Brown continue their work on homelessness and affordable housing, we urge them to take this report into account. Many local governments are finding success, but need additional resources to meet the sizable need. We also urge local governments and nonprofits to put its information and resources to use. Solutions are available, but it’s now up to all of us to implement them.

Bodies recovered from Fallen Leaf Lake - "No evidence of Foul Play"

[EDSO Sergeant Anthony Prencipe]

Detectives from the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office provided the California Department of Justice with DNA samples from the two bodies recovered from Fallen Leaf Lake in August and October.

The California Department of Justice confirmed the identities of both bodies.

-- The female recovered on August 29, 2017 was identified through DNA as 71 year old Cynthia Ellis (aka: Cynthia Prehoda) from South Lake Tahoe, Ca. Ellis went missing in 2001 and was believed to have committed suicide by drowning in Fallen Leaf Lake. A forensic autopsy and examination by a Forensic Anthropologist was unable to determine a cause of death.

-- The male recovered on October 27, 2017 was identified through DNA as 74 year old Michael Whalen. Whalen went missing in 2004 after traveling to the Lake Tahoe area from Florida. Whalen arrived in the South Lake Tahoe area in his van, carrying a brown, wood colored canoe. Whalen's van was located near Fallen Leaf Lake in late 2004. The whereabouts of Whalen's canoe are unknown. The small anchor and rope around Whalen's legs was consistent with an anchor used for a canoe. A forensic autopsy and examination by a Forensic Anthropologist was unable to determine a cause of death.

The conclusions on cause of death are due to the condition of the remains. There was no evidence of foul play.

Both families have been notified and are thankful for the closure brought by the the efforts of Bruce's Legacy, the Fallen Leaf Fire Department, El Dorado County Search and Rescue and the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office.

Anyone with information on Michael Whalen, the location of his canoe, or any canoe found at Fallen Leaf Lake around 2004 or 2005 is asked to call El Dorado County Sheriff's Detective Rich Horn at (530) 642-4729 or Detective Damian Frisby at (530) 573-3022.
