Walk a Mile in Her Shoes!

[PRpond]

Walk a Mile in Her Shoes® is a playful event that allows men the opportunity to raise awareness about the very serious issues of sexual assault and domestic violence. The goal of the walk is to raise community awareness about the vital role men play in eliminating violence against women.

Put Yourself in Her Shoes

Each year, an ever-increasing number of men, women and their families are joining the award-winning Walk a Mile in Her Shoes®: The International Men's March to Stop Rape, Sexual Assault & Gender Violence. A Walk a Mile in Her Shoes® Event is a playful opportunity for men to raise awareness in their community about the serious causes, effects and remediations to men's sexualized violence against women.

First You Walk the Walk

There is an old saying: "You can't really understand another person's experience until you've walked a mile in their shoes." Walk a Mile in Her Shoes® asks men to literally walk one mile in women's high-heeled shoes. It's not easy walking in these shoes, but it's fun and it gets the community to talk about something that's really difficult to talk about: gender relations and men's sexualized violence against women.

Then You Talk the Talk

It's critical to open communication about sexualized violence. While hidden away, sexualized violence is immune to cure. Unfortunately, it's difficult to get people talking. People unfamiliar with men's sexualized violence against women don't want to know it exists. It's ugly. People that have experienced sexualized violence themselves want to forget about it. How do you get people talking now, so they can prevent it from happening? And if it's already happened, how do you help them recover.

Not Just a Women's Issue

Here Sexualized violence does not just affect women. It affects the men who care about them, their families, their friends, their coworkers, and their communities. Sexualized violence is epidemic. Some of the statistics: Every two minutes someone in America is raped. One in six American women are victims of sexual assault. That means someone you know, someone you care about, has been or may become the victim of sexual violence. It may be your mother, your sister, your friend, your girlfriend, your wife, your coworker or your daughter.

We hope you’ll grab your heels and join us for this fun filled event!

Saturday 14 April 2018, 10:00 till Saturday 14 April 2018, 13:00
Placerville Town Hall

Organized by : The Center for Violence-Free Relationships

On Saturday, April 14, 2018 The Center will hold the 16th Annual Walk a Mile in Her Shoes® event on Placerville’s Historic Main Street where men will step into some crazy large women’s high heels and walk a mile to raise awareness about violence against women.

Game on — can you sport a pair of heels for a whole mile?
Challenge your friends to get involved by organizing a team and competing to see who can raise the most funds.

Keep California Safe is working to reclassify some crimes to prevent early release

$

Keep California Safe is a coalition of crime victims, law enforcement, business owners and public safety leaders working to pass the “Reducing Crime and Keeping California Safe Act of 2018.”  The Initiative will reclassify currently “non-violent” crimes like rape of an unconscious person, sex trafficking of a child and 14 other serious crimes as “violent” — to prevent the early release of inmates convicted of these crimes.   Keep California Safe is a Project of the California Public Safety Partnership Issues Committee with major funding from Los Angeles Deputy Sheriffs, Peace Officers Research Association of California, and Los Angeles Police Protective League.

[NICHOLAS PRECIADO]

A statewide initiative to ask voters to change portions of three crime-related laws is picking up steam in Santa Clara County, and is soon expected to reach San Benito County.

Over the last week and a half, both the Morgan Hill City Council and Gilroy City Council passed support resolutions for a Reducing Crime and Keeping California Safe Act of 2018, which would change portions of voter-approved Proposition 47 and 57, as well as Assembly Bill 109, to reclassify current “nonviolent” crimes as “violent” to prevent the early release of inmates convicted of various sex and assault crimes.

The initiative also aims to reform the parole system to stop early release of violent felons, expand parolee oversight, strengthen penalties for parole violations, reform theft laws, and expand DNA collection for drug, theft, domestic violence, and other crimes. It is supported by the California Police Chiefs Association, The California District Attorney’s Association, and the Peace Officers Research Association of California.

“The bottom line is I think that if we can find ways to rehabilitate people, that is fantastic. I completely support that,” Gilroy Police Chief Scot Smithee said Tuesday. “The idea of this [initiative] is not aimed at those people. It is aimed at those who do not choose to avail themselves of those opportunities and continue to choose a life of crime. There needs to be consequences to deal with those people.”

Gilroy Mayor Roland Velasco spent a few hours Saturday morning at First Street Coffee helping residents collect signatures for the new initiative, which needs 365,880 signatures by August to qualify for the November election. Over 100 signatures were gathered in two hours, he said.

Velasco said he supports the Reducing Crime and Keeping California Safe Act of 2018 because of the ill effects of Prop 47, 57, and AB 109.

“It is creating havoc in cities up and down the state,” Velasco said Tuesday. “It is impacting the quality of life of our residents. It is becoming a strain on public safety services.”

California voters approved Proposition 47 in November 2014, which reduced certain drug possession felonies to misdemeanors and also required misdemeanor sentencing for petty theft, receiving stolen property, and forging or writing bad checks all to the amount of $950 or less. Prior to Prop 47, the dollar threshold for theft to be considered a felony was $450.

“If someone comes into your house and steals something from you, as long as the value is less than $950, if we caught and arrested them we would give them a citation ticket and let them go,” Smithee said. “They could come back and do the same thing and still get the same ticket. It does not matter how many times. The result is never going to be more than getting a ticket and let go again because there is no sanction for how many times something has been done. It is each a separate case.”

Former Gilroy Police Officer and current Hollister City Councilman Jim Gillio is another supporter of the Reducing Crime and Keeping California Safe Act of 2018.

“Over the past several years we have had Proposition 47 and Proposition 57 that have essentially, in an administrative way, decriminalized certain crimes,” Gillio said by phone Monday. “Certain violent crimes have been lowered, so you are eligible for early release. Administratively, so you are eligible for early release is what I mean by lowered.”

California voters approved Proposition 57 in November 2016, which allowed parole consideration for nonviolent felons, authorized credit-earning opportunities for good behavior, and changed some juvenile prosecution policies.

According to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, Proposition 57 moved up parole consideration for nonviolent offenders who served the full term of a primary offense sentence and demonstrated their release to the community would not pose an unreasonable risk of violence.

“The overall intent of both Prop 47 and 57 was to increase the opportunities for rehabilitation and try to minimize mass incarceration, but there were unintended consequences,” Gillio said.

The Hollister councilman is currently working with Acting Chief of Police Carlos Reynoso to have a support resolution for the new initiative placed on the next city council meeting on March 5.

“I will present it to the city council for their consideration,” Reynoso said. “If passed, all we are asking for is their support in getting this initiative on the ballot and letting the citizens of our community and the state vote on it.”

San Benito County Sheriff Darren Thompson, who supports the Reducing Crime and Keeping California Safe Act of 2018, said he hopes to approach the San Benito County Board of Supervisors in the near future to see if they would support the initiative.

“The previous measures, Proposition 47, 57, and AB 109, are designed to reduce state prison population, they are not designed to increase public safety,” Thompson said. “Certainly some adjustments are in order to those original measures.”

Velasco said he hopes the initiative will be able to collect enough signatures to go before voters statewide in November.

“Hopefully California voters will support this proposition,” he said. “I think it will go a long way in making sure that people who should be locked up, are locked up.”

Grapes of Wrath Production Review - "The Struggle"

$

[Paul Bott]

"I told myself after seeing this production of The Grapes of Wrath, currently playing at the Imagination Theater in Placerville, I told myself that I would write some kind of review or just something to express how I felt about the play.

It's now been two weeks since I've seen that show for the first time, and have now seen it two more times and plan to see it again on the 18th and then again on the final day.

I guess the reason I haven't written anything is because the show is so powerful and it really takes time I suppose, to digest the message and to appreciate the voice of John Steinbeck, who wrote the play,
I will say the play is powerful and moving but I will also say that it mirrors our society today and what we are facing with regard to the economy, jobs and even food and education. To see the struggle of these people, the Joad family, is to see ourselves and wonder if we as individuals and families would have the strength to survive the tribulations that they went through.

The first night I saw the show, I was sitting next to the director, Lanny Langford, and after the final curtain call, and based upon his direction and his casting I simply turned to him and asked "how did you do this". I also asked him if perhaps this may have been his best work to date and he smiled modestly and said perhaps.

This to me as a directors show, and this particular director took the show and choreographed all of the lives involved in telling the story, seamlessly.

It is so hard to point to one particular aspect of the show that stands out, because it all works together so well. Of course Steinbeck is eloquent and prophetic, his words are the story and unlike most shows, or even books you will be drawn into the story, you will find yourself living as an observer or even as part of his play as the reality, and the mastery invite you in and you become part of the whole.

There were some outstanding performances of course, but before I name a few I just want to say that the show was perfectly cast and every actor was exceptional.

Never mind I changed my mind, because it's really not a show that rests on the shoulders of one actor, one actor does not carry the show. The shower is carried by the brilliant writing and the brilliant directing.

I'm this, because there's only a few weeks left for you to see something historically brilliant. Something like this doesn't pass through Placerville very often and we should all as a community take advantage of this production.

Last night when I saw the show, towards the end I cried or wept and I recognized the struggle and the hope within the struggle to come out of it a better person.

Dellinger Files For Recorder-Clerk In El Dorado County

$

[Bob Conover]

Placerville, CA – Dan Dellinger, a self-employed government relations and political consultant, officially filed the required legal paperwork to have his name placed before voters for the office of County Recorder-Clerk on the June 5 Primary ballot. Dellinger’s background includes nine years experience with the California State Legislature and California Commission for Economic Development helping draft legislation, conducting policy research, and assisting families resolve problems with government agencies; seven years administrative experience managing the Gilroy Visitor’s Bureau, Gilroy Chamber of Commerce, and Del Norte County Chamber of Commerce & Visitors Authority; and eighteen years self-employment experience as a Government Relations and Political Consultant. Citing a need for reform, Dellinger outlined his future vision and goals for the Recorder-Clerk’s Office and called for an end to the Bonus Scheme whereby some County elected officials add to their guaranteed six-figure salaries by adding non-performance bonuses to their paychecks.

“Government agencies function best when the folks working in them understand that they are public servants and that you and I are their customers”, explained Dellinger, “that is why I believe we can provide taxpayers excellent results by fostering a caring public service culture, having staff answer the telephones instead of computers or call centers, and ensure accountability by letting our customers know which staff members are working to resolve their problem”.

“My goals, if hired by the voters,” said Dellinger, “will be to save taxpayer money, improve customer service, and prevent document and voter fraud in today’s new era of computer hacking, automatic DMV voter registration, and the State’s planned change to 100% vote-by-mail elections eliminating traditional election day polling booths”.

“If elected I will not participate in our County’s shameful  Bonus Scheme whereby some County elected officials fatten their guaranteed six-figure salaries with added non-performance bonuses and will continue to work to permanently eliminate this corrupt practice,” pledged Dellinger.

Dellinger’s growing list of endorsements includes the California Taxpayer Protection Committee, California ProLife Council, Bikers of Lesser Tolerance, and the Modified Motorcycle Association.  Dellinger recently received the coveted “A” Rating from Gun Owners of California.  Dan Dellinger can be reached at (530) 644-5663.

California - Judge Steven Bailey (Ret.) was honored to receive the endorsement of the California Republican Assembly (CRA), the oldest and largest volunteer organization chartered by the California Republican Party. Delegates to the CRA voted unanimously to endorse Bailey over his Republican opponent who also spoke before the group during the general session on Saturday.

The CRA was the leading volunteer organization behind the Reagan revolution leading President Reagan to often refer to the CRA as "the conscience of the Republican Party." Starting in the 1990s, the CRA's record of success spawned a national organization based on its efforts, the National Federation of Republican Assemblies, which now has affiliates in forty states.

The California Republican Assembly endorsement of Judge Bailey follows that of Gun Owners of California, conservative Republican CongressmanTom McClintock, and State Senators Jim NielsenTed GainesJohn MoorlachMike Morrell, and Joel Anderson, a past CRA Vice President.

Jason Wayne Deane Arrested after stolen travel trailer investigation

[CHP – Placerville]

On 3-5-18, Officer Smith was called out to the Lotus area to recover a stolen travel trailer. That travel trailer had been stolen from the Greenwood area four months ago. While he was there he also impounded two other trailers for further investigation due to a lack of identifying information on the trailers.

Officer Smith found evidence linking Jason Wayne Deane (pictured) to the theft of the travel trailer. One of the unidentified trailers was positively identified by Officer Kliebe who has special training in vehicle identification. That trailer was identified as having been stolen out of Placerville in February 2017. Identification of the other trailer is pending. During the investigation, Officer Smith was able to further link Deane to the thefts and it is believed there may be more trailers out there. A fourth trailer was also found during the investigation and is pictured.

On 3-11-18, Officer Smith was driving in the city of Placerville and saw Deane parked at a gas station. He pulled into the gas station and arrested Deane without incident for the two stolen trailers. Deane was also in possession of about half a pound of marijuana. He was booked at the El Dorado County Jail on several charges relating to the thefts. The investigation is ongoing.

If you recognize Deane and know any information about any other trailers he may be involved with or you recognize the pictured black trailers, please contact Officer Smith at the Placerville CHP office (530) 622-1110 or (916) 861-1300 (after hours).

State Audit Slams Counties for Hoarding Mental Health Money, But There Are Deeper Problems With MHSA

$

[Cal County News]

In 2004, California voters approved a 1 percent income tax on millionaires in the hopes of fixing the state’s mental health crisis. Fourteen years later, much of the money has not been spent. Meantime, confusion, frustration, and legal wrangling abound.

Some of the problems are outlined in this recent state audit which criticizes a number of California counties for sitting on over $200 million in funds that were supposed to go toward mental health services under MHSA. But, as the report’s internals make clear, the state bears plenty of blame.

According to State Auditor Elaine Howle, by the end of the 2015-2016 fiscal year, $1.5 billion had been amassed from the measure. The state then allocated $1.4 billion to 59 local mental health agencies, but $231 million of that money went unspent.

The audit found that the state’s Department of Health Care Services’ failure to develop a process for recouping any unspent funds contributed to the problem. The counties are supposed to return any unspent money within three years but, absent that process, there was little incentive to spend the money in a timely fashion. Then last year, legislators pushed the period of repayment back even further, enacting a one-time change allowing agencies to hold onto some of the funds until 2020.

Assemblyman Todd Gloria (D-San Diego) wants to see the time period for repayment shortened to two years. The latest audit, he says, underscores the need for such legislation. It should be noted that San Diego appears to be one of the counties that was spending the funds appropriately, albeit not as quickly as some would have hoped.

Aside from the lack of incentive to spend the funds, auditors flagged poor oversight of programs and projects funded by the law. Local mental health agencies are supposed to submit reports to the oversight commission for review and technical assistance with these projects, but the panel “has not completed an internal process for reviewing any of these reports,” the auditor said.

The problems plaguing MHSA don’t end there. The state has also been engaged in a legal tussle with a Sacramento attorney over whether or not it can allocate some of Prop 63’s revenue to housing construction for the homeless. Senate President Pro Tem Kevin de León has argued that it most certainly can, citing the link between mental health and homelessness. But attorney Mary Ann Bernard says that would be unconstitutional, as Prop 63 never specified that the money would be used for housing bonds.

“I recognize that housing is needed, but stealing treatment money from the severely mentally ill is despicable and counterproductive,” she said.

Between the hoarding, legal questions, and lax oversight, what is clear is that MHSA needs some sort of fix.

“It’s remarkable just how poorly MHSA has been implemented,” writes the Orange County Register Editorial Board.  “Implementation of Prop. 63 has been a case study for how a perfectly reasonable idea can be poorly put into place even with assurances of accountability. California and local mental health agencies must do better.”
