There’s no better venue to test your Snowshoe skills than on the frigid shores of South Lake Tahoe during the annual Snowshoe Cocktail Races series at the Beacon Bar and Grill. The fun starts Saturday at 7 p.m. Courtesy photo

Strap on your snowshoes, grab a serving tray and get ready to compete, Camp Richardson Resort’s annual laugh-out-loud Snowshoe Cocktail Races start Jan. 21.

Other destinations have races, but nothing comes close to this three-part race series held on the beach in front of the Beacon Bar and Grill. This year is sure to be legendary with some amazing New Year snowstorms that dropped a base of around 3 feet at lake level and with more on the way courtesy of an atmospheric river headed toward Lake Tahoe.

A favorite with visitors and locals, racers, cocktail trays in hand must navigate through obstacles and up and down the beach. Racers will run, knees up, kicking snow with their snowshoes while balancing a tray full of drinks and hoping to be the fastest without spilling.

The winner is the fastest and cleanest — no spillage allowed — at the finish. For their efforts competitors can win prizes that range from snowshoes and dining certificates to equipment and marina rentals. Registration is free and there are multiple race categories. camprichardson.com

Races start at 7 p.m. with signups starting at 5 p.m. The series continues on Feb. 18 and March 18.

Prize sponsors include Action Watersports, Round Hill Pines Beach Resort and Camp Richardson.

For information on winter recreation, equipment rentals, lodging and packages call (800) 544-1801 or visit CampRichardson.com.

Just EDHSC and the USA Stars as the only true El Dorado Hills-based soccer clubs

$

With Ethos' merger with the much larger Folsom Soccer Club, that leaves just EDHSC and the USA Stars as the only true El Dorado Hills-based clubs.

Five new clubs from three different regions are set to join NorCal Premier Soccer starting in the spring of 2017, the NorCal Board of Directors announced Friday.

East San Jose (Region 2), Monterey Bay Soccer Club (Region 2), USA Stars (Region 6), Elite Soccer Academy 209 (Region 8) and Soccer for Kids (Region 8) will each begin affiliations with NorCal effective immediately, bringing the total number of NorCal-affiliated clubs to 218.

“NorCal Premier has always recognized the central role that Soccer Clubs play throughout the world in supporting and developing players for all levels of the game,” said NorCal Director of Operations Daniel Chamberlain. “With the development of US Club Soccer, the model of only one competitive soccer club existing in a given area has changed and new clubs are being developed. We have long believed that as the monopoly provided under the old model eroded, new competition would benefit the development of the game as new clubs introduced competitive year-round soccer to more players.”

Each club underwent a rigorous application process that lasted several months in order to be approved by the Board of Directors. That application process includes a review by the NorCal Club Membership Committee, which is made up of several NorCal Directors of Coaching from different regions, a club visit and meeting with the technical staff and Board of Directors from each applicant and a field permit evaluation.

“We have found with more clubs, the player pool has expanded and there are more players competing in club soccer than ever before,” Chamberlain said. “Motivated players who were once cut or forced to play in a lower more recreational level, are now able to find a club that can provide access to year-round competition as well as promotion into the highest levels of play.”

NorCal Premier Soccer is the top organization for developing players, clubs, coaches and referees in the passionate soccer region that is Northern California. Through affiliations with 218 different clubs, NorCal Premier Soccer provides an unmatched level of quality programs assisting the development of the overall soccer structure in Northern California.

Note:  Seven players (three ‘03 boys, two ’01 girls and two ‘04 girls) were invited to the Olympic Development Program championships in Arizona in early January (two of these kids go to Marina, include Grace Goines). There are 15 USA Stars players currently participating in the ODP. With Ethos’ merger with the much larger Folsom Soccer Club, that leaves just EDHSC and the USA Stars as the only true El Dorado Hills-based clubs. The vast majority of the Stars players are from EDH.

Local Hospital Confirms Increase in Pot Related Mysterious Illness

$

Lance Orr, Barton Health medical director of the Emergency Department -- “We have seen patients that match the flu-like illness described in this article [below]. Medically speaking, this is referred to as ‘cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome.’ Symptoms include abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting and are related to heavy or long term marijuana use. If the patient continues to use marijuana, symptoms are likely to persist and we have seen patients with this condition return to the Emergency Department. Fortunately, symptoms typically resolve if the patient abstains from marijuana. Though this medical advice is not always taken by patients, the Emergency Department staff and physicians have seen firsthand how heavy marijuana use can cause and prolong this syndrome.

By Mary Papenfuss, Huffington Post --

"Mysterious Marijuana-Related Illness Popping Up In Emergency Rooms"

A mysterious marijuana-related illness is popping up with increasing frequency in hospital emergency rooms, particularly in states where cannabis is now legal.

The symptoms are severe abdominal pain and violent vomiting — and most doctors are initially stumped when they encounter patients with the problem.

The illness is cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome, which is linked to heavy, long-term use of marijuana, according to experts. For some reason, the nausea and vomiting of CHS can be relieved with hot showers or baths, which can serve as an important hint for physicians trying to diagnose a patient.

The condition is especially puzzling considering cannabis’ accepted reputation as an anti-nausea agent; two cannabinoid-based medications are FDA-approved for alleviating nausea in people undergoing chemotherapy for cancer, while nausea is a common reason for doctors to prescribe cannabis in states that have legalized medical marijuana.

Since 2009, when the federal government relaxed its stance on medical marijuana, emergency room diagnoses for CHS in two of Colorado’s hospitals nearly doubled, according to a study co-authored by Dr. Kennon Heard, a physician at the University of Colorado Hospital in Aurora. Now that cannabis is also legal for recreational use in the state, “we are seeing it quite frequently,” Heard told CBS News. “My colleagues are seeing this on a daily to weekly basis.”

Emergency rooms in other areas where cannabis is legal are also reporting more cases of CHS. Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, D.C., and Harborview Medical Center and the University of Washington Medical Center in Seattle are among hospitals reporting an uptick.

CHS was first described in 2004 by scientists in Australia who published a small study about a group of 19 patients complaining of nausea, vomiting and chills. These participants were heavy long-term marijuana users (the study described the behavior as “chronic cannabis abuse”) who had developed a cyclical vomiting illness after several years of cannabis use. The study lost 10 patients to lack of consent or confounding factors, but the scientists found that seven of the patients who stopped using cannabis were able to stop the vomiting, three did not abstain and continued to have vomiting episodes, and three abstained for a short period and began vomiting again when they resumed using cannabis.

The researchers also noticed that nine of the patients were compulsive bathers who took an abnormal amount of hot showers or baths, even waking up in the night to do it. Their compulsion was not due to psychosis, the researchers wrote, but because the patients had discovered on their own that their nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain would subside just a few minutes after submersion in the hot water.

Since that study was published, scientists have not been able to pinpoint the exact cause of the syndrome, and only know that abstaining from cannabis generally helps people stop vomiting.

“The science behind it is not clear,” Heard told the Denver Channel. “The most likely cause is that people using marijuana frequently and in high doses have changes in the receptors in their body, and those receptors become dysregulated in some way, and it starts causing pain.”

Dr. David Steinbruner, an emergency room physician at Memorial Hospital in Colorado Springs, believes it’s likely triggered with a significant amount of marijuana. “The corollary would be alcohol. So small amounts may be fine for people, but over a long time it will cause all kinds of problems,” Steinbruner told KDRO-TV.

In its most severe form, the illness can lead to kidney failure — but symptoms stop within days of ending marijuana use. However, there is no research on how common CHS is among people who use cannabis, what the risk factors are for developing it and how often marijuana for medical use leads to excessive cannabis use. Heard, who published the 2015 study showing the number of CHS cases rise after Colorado legalized marijuana, noted in his report that despite the high use of pot in the state, the absolute number of cases still remains very low, “underscoring that CHS is a relatively uncommon condition.”

“Patients are given IV fluids and medication to resolve the vomiting and help with the pain,” explained Heard. “But the treatment is really to stop using marijuana, or at least to cut back severely, and that’s really the only way to make it better.”

This story has been updated with additional information on CHS and the research around it.

Pursuit of Parolee at Large Ends in Arrest

Kim Nida, Placerville Police -- Reuben Maclis was arrested for an outstanding parole warrant after leading police in vehicle pursuit.

On January 17, 2017 just after 4 p.m., the Placerville Police Department received information that a wanted subject, Reuben Maclis (DOB 2/16/82), was at a storage unit off of Locust Street in the city of Placerville. Maclis had two outstanding warrants for his arrest, which included; one for domestic violence, penal code section 273.5, and assault with a deadly weapon, penal code section 245 (A)(1), a second warrant for violation of parole, penal code section 3056.

When officers responded to the area of Locust Street near the storage facility, the vehicle that Maclis was associated with left the storage facility headed north on Locust Street. Officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle, however the driver failed to yield and a pursuit was initiated. The driver led officers on a 6 minute pursuit out of the city on Cedar Ravine Road. The pursuit ended when the driver turned off a dirt road and due to terrain, he couldn’t drive the truck any further. The driver and only passenger of the vehicle immediately led officers on a foot pursuit in the area of Pretty Good Road and Quarry Road area. Maclis was apprehended a short distance later at a residence off of Moonshine Hill Road. The passenger of the vehicle was not located.

“The efforts of our law enforcement partners, El Dorado County Sheriff’s Department and California Highway Patrol are invaluable,” City of Placerville’s Chief of Police Dan Drummond remarked. “They responded to the area quickly and assisted us with the apprehension of this wanted felon.”

Maclis was booked into the El Dorado County Jail for the two outstanding warrants without bail.

Exploring Lake Tahoe and the Eastern Sierras

$

by mk1005 -- Last week I wrote all about my family’s adventures through California Gold Country, the region of the state lying just west of the Sierra Nevada’s. We discovered a beautiful area rich in history but were also eager to discover the Eastern side of the mountain range. Luckily, we did just that as we made our way south to return home.

After leaving the Grass Valley/Nevada City area we headed east along highway 80 through a mountainous forested area. It was absolutely beautiful and we had to stop at a vista point to take in the view...

After we cross the Sierras we made our way south to Lake Tahoe stopping for the night in the town of South Lake Tahoe.

The next morning, after days of complimentary hotel breakfasts, we decided to splurge on a restaurant meal and headed to Heidi’s Pancake House.

Open since 1962 it’s a delightfully kitschy homage to the famed Alpine maiden. But don’t think it’s all atmosphere – the food is actually quite good. We all ordered delicious pancakes and it turned out to be one of the best meals of the trip.

With our fully sated bellies we headed out to explore the lake.

It was crisp and cold and incredibly beautiful. As we explored we came across the Tallac Historic Site – a group of historic lakeside cabins belonging to some of the wealthiest families of the early 20th century.

Unfortunately, the buildings were already closed for the season but the grounds remained open and made for a picturesque nature walk.

We were hoping to then ride horses at the adjacent Camp Richardson but the stables were, unfortunately, closed...

Students Inspiring Teachers says school Superintendent Stephen Wehr

Stephen Wehr, Superintendent -- As I walk our schools and talk with students and staff, it is rewarding to see the impact of our professional development efforts on student learning.

It is evident that great teaching can change a student’s life. There are an endless amount of stories that attest to this statement. And it is not always easy to change a student’s life, which is why it takes a great teacher to do so. A great teacher tries to be an inspiration to their students; motivating them to reach new goals. But have you ever thought about this scenario in the reverse order? How are teachers being inspired by their students? What makes them eager to go to work every day?

I am excited to introduce you to a new video series called “Students Inspiring Teachers” which will debut this year. The series focuses on numerous teachers from different schools throughout the EDUHSD who have been inspired by their students. Click link below for a sneak peek:

EL DORADO HILLS (CBS13) – A homeowner watched and ran as his pine tree uprooted among heavy winds.

“This is crazy. Nothing like I’ve ever seen. Look at this, look at the ground,” Dave Stroncak said while looking in disbelief.

Saturated roots and wicked winds took both this massive pine and even Dave by storm.

“I tried to tie my tarp down because the wind was blowing so hard this way. So I’m tying this last one to the trailer here when I saw this whole ground lift up. I mean it lifted up like for 4 feet and went back down and I thought, ‘That tree is going to go!’ So I ran around like crazy to the front and when I got there the tree fell down,” he said.

It landed right on the corner of his neighbor’s home who just moved in.

He said not quite the welcoming to the neighborhood he had hoped for.

“We are lucky because it’s a huge tree if it were to come this way it would’ve taken out our house. So we’re lucky, well we’re not lucky it could’ve fallen maybe a little bit more left and missed their house,” he said.

Another house down the street was also smacked with high winds toppling a tree onto the home next door.

Dave has lived off of Shasta Circle since 1981 and said this winter has certainly packed a punch.

Emergency crews say all this rain has caused the ground to weaken which makes it easy for tall trees to rip straight out of the ground.

Update on El Dorado County Infrastructure Problems Due to Recent Storms

$

Placerville, CA – El Dorado County over the last couple of weeks has seen a significant amount of rain and snow fall. The rain and snow fall has caused infrastructure problems in the County.

The following is an update of road closures:
 - Fort Jim Road at Newtown Road - Failing drainage structure.
 - Kyburz Drive - Mudslide/trees/debris blocking drainage. Will take several days to remove. Local access available for residents.
 - Weber Creek at Jurgens/Luneman - Low water crossing flooded and unsafe for vehicle traffic.
 - Cosumnes Mine Road at North Fork of Cosumnes River. Bridge approach failure. In addition, other sections of the road, not associated with the bridge, have experienced slope failure taking part of the road down the slope.
 - Arapahoe Road between San Diego Street and Country Club Drive – A sinkhole was discovered.
 - Peavine Ridge Road just to the north of US 50 – The road is slipping.

The following are roads that the County is working to correct but are still passable. Please use caution while using these roads:
 - Airport Road just east of the airport – There is a slip in the road which has been barricaded.
 - Grizzly Flat Road – Has a failing culvert, which has been patched but will need a permanent fix when weather allows.
 - Newtown Road – There is a major slip beyond the Pleasant Valley entrance of Fort Jim Road.
 - String Canyon Road – Has a major slip that is barricaded.
 - Green Valley Road – Has a slip just to the west of the new Weber Creek Bridge.
 - White Meadows Road – The slope above the road is beginning to slide which is causing the road to buckle. The area has been barricaded.

In addition, County staff has been responding to calls regarding 100s of downed trees, flooding, potholes, and small and large slides. The most significant slides have occurred along Salmon Falls Road, Rock Creek Road, Mosquito Road, Newtown Road, Forni Road, and Hassler Road. County staff on the West Slope has been working 24 hours a day to fix and mitigate the infrastructure issues that have been caused by rain and snow fall.

In the Tahoe Basin, significant snow amounts, have staff working 24 hours a day to plow roads, clear blocked drains due to snow berms, and remove downed trees. At this time there are no County road closures in the Tahoe Basin.

If you have any knowledge of damage to County infrastructure (roads, bridges, etc.) please contact the County at the following phone number: 530-642-4909.

"Big Brother" Speaks Up about Ponderosa Student with a Gun

SHINGLE SPRINGS -- A 16 year old Ponderosa High School Student was arrested and charged with murdering his relative Thursday after deputies say they found a body at his home and a loaded handgun in his possession on campus.

The El Dorado County Sheriff's Office removed the body from a home on Neef Lane in Shingle Springs late Thursday. At the time, they did not identify the victim, or how or when that person was killed.

However, neighbors close to the family told FOX40 the victim had been missing for a couple of days.

The Sheriff's Department has not revealed the name of the suspect because he is a minor. He was booked into juvenile hall Thursday and charged with murder.

Deputies say they detained the suspect at Ponderosa High School Thursday morning and arrested him for bringing a loaded firearm onto campus. Some time after the suspect was brought in for questioning, the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office announced it was working on a homicide investigation at his home.

"I've spent a lot of time with him and I really think a lot of him. I told him, I says, 'I'll be your big brother as long as you want.' We've climbed mountains together and I've told him, 'You can just pull me up the mountain behind you when I'm too old to climb," Herschel Leffler said.

Leffler told FOX40 he was the suspect's mentor through the Big Brothers and Big Sisters of America. He said they had plans to see a movie Thursday evening, but when he arrived at the home on Neef Lane to pick him up, he instead discovered detectives combing the property for evidence amidst the homicide investigation.

Leffler described the suspect as a respectful and energetic young man, a cross country runner who wanted to join the military. He said he lived at the home on Neef Lane with his great aunt and great uncle who cared for him after his mother lost custody.

"I tried to help him however I could. He was wonderful. He was always great with me," Leffler said.

But a neighbor told FOX40 off camera that she had been scared of the 16-year-old since he was a boy. She said she had witnessed him being cruel to animals.

"There was other people that would say, 'Oh, THAT kid. He's just different,'" a Ponderosa High School student named Nick said.

Nick said the suspect was in his English class, and described him only as quiet. He said word traveled fast on campus that their fellow classmate was arrested and that he might have had trouble with the law in the past.

"You know, if that kid was an outcast or didn't have many friends that just makes us want to come together as a community, as a school and build that relationship between each other, because you never know," Nick said.

The El Dorado County Sheriff's Office said they did not believe any students or staff at Ponderosa High School had any safety concerns.
