Pot’s legal in California. So why are people still getting busted in Yosemite?

Recreational marijuana is now legal in California but not on federal land, including national parks.

Results from the 2016 election brought about new rules on the use of recreational and medicinal marijuana in several states, with more than half now allowing for the latter. Federal government leaders including president-elect Donald Trump have voiced their opinion on the changing state of mind around marijuana. Is this the beginning of the end of marijuana prohibition?

BY SEAN COCKERHAM, WASHINGTON -- Think pot is now legal in California? Try telling that to the National Park Service rangers ready to bust people caught with marijuana in Yosemite, Redwood, Death Valley and other federal lands across the state.

The federal government says it’s not backing off on citing people who are caught with marijuana in California’s national parks, monuments, recreational areas and other federal lands regardless of the landslide vote that legalized recreational marijuana in the state.

“Marijuana – recreational, medical or otherwise – remains prohibited on federal public lands and property, regardless of state laws,” said Andrew Munoz, Pacific West spokesman for the National Park Service. “So there is no change: We will continue to enforce marijuana prohibition as before.”

That’s going to come as an unpleasant surprise to people, said Mike Mitchell, a Fresno defense attorney who has represented people busted for pot in Yosemite.

“I’d anticipate more people thinking now that it is legal in the park,” Mitchell said. “A lot of people don’t recognize that you are going into a completely different jurisdiction; it’s just like going into a different state. A lot of people don’t know that. They just think they’re going into a park, like any other California park.”

It’s been an issue in states that had legalized marijuana previously, where people are being cited for weed possession on federal land in spite of President Barack Obama’s declaration that it wasn’t a priority to go after people who were following their states’pot laws.

President-elect Donald Trump has shown no inclination to change course, appointing staunch anti-marijuana Sen. Jeff Sessions, R-Ala., as attorney general.

The level of federal enforcement appears to depend on the state. Few people seem to get busted anymore for taking joints into Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado, a state that legalized pot in 2012, said Brian Vicente, partner at a national Denver-based law firm that specializes in marijuana issues.

“But in New Jersey and in Washington state, they’re still seeing these cases ending up in federal court. Typically it’s misdemeanor possession,” Vicente said. “It’s folks thinking, ‘Oh, marijuana is legal in Washington state,’ or they’re a medical marijuana patient in New Jersey, which doesn’t have fully legal marijuana, and then they’re getting cited for possession.”

A LOT OF THE TIMES, AT LEAST THE CASES I’VE HAD HAVE BEEN VEHICLE STOPS, WHERE THEY’RE STOPPED FOR SOME OTHER ISSUE.Mike Mitchell, a Fresno defense attorney who has represented people busted for pot in Yosemite

At least 146 people were cited in Washington state for having pot on federal land over seven months immediately following that state’s vote to legalize in 2012. Vicente suspects federal officials in California might go somewhat easier.

“My guess is we’ll see a trend away from those citations. Legalization passed by a pretty wide margin in California, and I think that sends a message,” Vicente said. “California has had medical marijuana since 1996, and I think it’s become more of an ingrained part of their society in a way that it hasn’t in New Jersey.”

The most marijuana citations in California’s parks are issued at Yosemite, which is the state’s most visited national park and has a history of more pot busts than any other national park in the United States.

“A lot of the times, at least the cases I’ve had, have been vehicle stops, where they’re stopped for some other issue, like a tail light being out or swerving or something along those lines,” said Fresno defense lawyer Mitchell. “And then they smell the odor of marijuana supposedly coming from the vehicle.”

Sometimes people think there is no problem because they have medical marijuana cards, Mitchell said, “but they didn’t realize that because they are in federal jurisdiction that the card didn’t apply.”

Yosemite issued 465 marijuana citations and made 123 pot-related arrests in the past two years, according to National Park Service data released through the Freedom of Information Act.

Fines for marijuana citations in California’s national parks depend on district courts but often end up being $200 or so. Arrests are rare, unless the case involves large amounts of concentrated cannabis, probation violations or another crime, like gun possession or drunken driving.

Golden Gate National Recreational Area in San Francisco was second to Yosemite in marijuana cases, with 175 incidents of pot-related citations, arrests or warnings the past year.

Park rangers can let marijuana slide with just a warning. At Joshua Tree National Park outside Los Angeles, “We only cite for this if there are other drugs involved,” said Acting Chief Ranger Dan Messaros.

“We do confiscate without citing, including people with medical cards,” Messaros wrote in an email. “Most of these are fake that we run into.”

Mason Tvert, communications director for the Marijuana Policy Project, said the primary marijuana issue in national parks was pot being grown illegally. Yosemite rangers seized 7,428 mature marijuana plants growing inside the park in a 2007 raid.

Legalization should help take care of that issue, Tvert said.

“When it comes to national parks, there will be a drop in the amount of marijuana being illegally grown because it will now be grown in regulated, legal facilities,” Tvert said.

Foreign News Details Sen McCain's involvement with Passing Trump-Russian Report to FBI

$
0
0

Senator John McCain passed documents to the FBI director, James Comey, last month alleging secret contacts between the Trump campaign and Moscow and that Russian intelligence had personally compromising material on the president-elect himself.

The material, which has been seen by the Guardian, is a series of reports on Trump’s relationship with Moscow. They were drawn up by a former western counter-intelligence official, now working as a private consultant. BuzzFeed on Tuesday published the documents, which it said were “unverified and potentially unverifiable”...

Senator John McCain, who was informed about the existence of the documents separately by an intermediary from a western allied state, dispatched an emissary overseas to meet the source and then decided to present the material to Comey in a one-on-one meeting on 9 December, according to a source aware of the meeting. The documents, which were first reported on last year by Mother Jones, are also in the hands of officials in the White House.

McCain is not thought to have made a judgment on the reliability of the documents but was sufficiently impressed by the source’s credentials to feel obliged to pass them to the FBI.

The Senate armed services committee, which Senator McCain chairs, launched an inquiry last week into Russian cyber-attacks during the election.

McCain was reluctant to get involved, according to a colleague, for fear the issue would be dismissed as a personal grudge against Trump. He pushed instead for the creation of a special Senate committee to look into connections between campaign staff and Moscow, but the proposal was blocked by the Republican leadership.

McCain told the NBC programme Meet the Press on Sunday: “I would like to see a select committee. Apparently that is not in agreement by our leadership. So we will move forward with the armed services committee and I’m sure foreign relations and intelligence committee will as well.”

But the senator added: “It is possible if enough information comes out, that that decision could be reversed. I still think it’s the best way to attack the issue.”

Happy Anniversary to the Lake Tahoe Humane Society

By Niki Congero, executive director of Lake Tahoe Humane Society & S.P.C.A. -- All of us at the Lake Tahoe Humane Society are very proud to have been servicing this community since 1967 and we really hope to be around another 50 years. Many people don’t understand what we do and often get us confused with El Dorado County Animal Services, which is our local animal shelter/animal control. We would like to take this opportunity to clarify what services we offer for the community versus El Dorado County Animal Services.

El Dorado County Animal Service is a county agency that provides animal control services and animal sheltering for the city of South Lake Tahoe. The city of South Lake Tahoe pays the county to provide these required services. What does that mean for you? This is the agency you call when you have a complaint about someone’s pet, you witness animal cruelty (all reports made to any animal control officer are confidential), need to surrender you pet (fee required), want to adopt a pet (fee required), if you find a lost pet, or have lost a pet. Please note they are open Monday-Saturday 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and closed noon-1 p.m. for lunch. They can be reached at 530-573-7925 and are located in Meyers. Leave them a message if they do not answer phone.

The Lake Tahoe Humane Society is a private 501(c)3 nonprofit that solely relies on private donations. We get no financial help from the city of South Lake Tahoe, El Dorado County, the state of California, the federal government, the ASPCA or the Humane Society of the United States (if you donate to those commercials with all the sad pets please understand we get none of that finical assistance they claim to give out).

What we do is cover the bases that animal services does not. We don’t have enough space in this article to explain all we do, but we wanted to give you a general idea so you know who to call if you need any of the following service:

Low income spay and neuter vouchers; pet food bank which offers pet food for those in need including providing pet food meals for the Warm Room and Bread and Broth (pet food is always available during regular business hours); disaster relief — our team is ready to shelter your pets in the event of a disaster like fire or most recently flooding; lost and found pet service — contact us when you’ve lost or found a pet and we will actively help get your furry family member back home; charitable emergency veterinary subsidy, which provides funds for pets having a life threatening medical emergency; fostering for special circumstances — we will arrange fostering for your pet at one of our foster family homes if you are having a medical emergency or need to escape a domestic violence situation; in home pet care — if you are facing a short-term hospital stay and have no one to care for your pet we will provide in home pet care; animal visitation at Barton Hospitals Skilled Nursing facility — our specially trained companion animals visit the patience multiple times a week truly brightening their day and our educational programs offer humane education, art and science to all grade levels. These are just some of our programs. For complete information on all our services, visit our website http://www.LakeTahoeHumaneSociety.org or call us during business hours 9 a .m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday at 530-542-2857.

We have a lot of fun, pet friendly events planned for this very special 50th anniversary year, so stay tuned for information and make sure your check our website’s event page for all updates. Follow us on Facebook for daily updates.

TERRY L GHERARDI -- On January 9th, the new members of the El Dorado County Republican Central Committee (RCC),  were sworn in by Recorder Clerk/Registrar of Voters, Bill Schultz. That same evening, RCC members voted to elect Todd White to serve as the 2017 Chairman.

The El Dorado County RCC is the elected body of the California Republican Party, and as such, the Chairman sits on the State's Chairman's Association and RCC delegates represent  our County at state conventions, conferences, and often meetings with the Governor and State Legislature.

Each of the 5 County Supervisor Districts has anywhere from 2 to 6 elected representatives, who serve Republican's in each of their districts. There are also 4 ex-officios, who were appointed to represent, Congressman Tom McClintock, Senator Ted Gaines and Assemblyman Kevin Kiley.  Assemblyman Frank Bigelow has yet to appoint someone to represent him on the RCC.

With the election of the new President and 115th Congress, optimism is running high with County Republicans. Plans are already underway for greater voter outreach, registration, as well as the formation of a Young Republican's group. The RCC joins the CRA, for the first 2017 event, with their annual Lincoln-Reagan Dinner, on February 9th, with guest speaker, KFBK Radio talk show host, Sheriff John McGinniss,an event, also attended by many of our Congressional, State, and County elected.

New officers, also,  recently took their seats on the El Dorado County Unit of the California Republican Assembly (CRA), as well as Republican Women Federated, in Georgetown, Cameron Park and South Lake Tahoe. All meet monthly and welcome visitors or new members. Information for for all county groups is available on the El Dorado County Republican Party website.

There are a couple seats available for appointment to the RCC, in Districts I, II, IV and V. The RCC meets, the second Monday of each month, at 6:30 pm., at its new meeting location, Park Community Church, on Wild Chapperal, in Shingle Springs. El Dorado County announces a community meeting for local stakeholders who have experience and expertise in mental health services, and/or substance abuse disorder treatment, and/or diversion programs to serve on El Dorado County’s Proposition 47 Local Advisory Committee.  The Local Advisory Committee is a requirement of the Proposition 47 Request for Proposal, released from Board of State and Community Corrections.

The meeting, Friday, January 13, 2017, from 1:30pm to approximately 4:00pm, is to discuss the community needs and prospective programs and/or services for mental health services, substance use disorder treatment, and diversion programs. In addition, the meeting will serve as a platform seeking Community Representation on the Proposition 47 Local Advisory Committee (LAC), as required in Request for Proposal and the grant administration.

Prop 47 Grant Overview

The California Board of State and Community Corrections issued a Request for Proposals for a grant to provide both adults and juveniles that have been arrested, charged with, or convicted of a criminal offense AND a history of mental health issues or substance use disorders, as well as other community-based supportive services. El Dorado County intends to submit a grant application, which is due February 21, 2017.

Local Advisory Committee Overview

The LAC will consist of county agency representatives and local stakeholders who have experience and expertise in the prospective programs and/or services to be implemented by the county’s Prop 47 proposal. The LAC will advise on:
• How to identify and prioritize the most pressing needs to be addressed (to include target population, target area, etc.);
• How to identify the strategies, programs and/or services to be undertaken to address those needs;
• The development of the grant project;
• Ongoing implementation of the grant project.

LAC Member Responsibilities

LAC members will be required to attend all Prop 47 grant application development meetings. A Schedule of future grant development meetings will be formalized on Friday, January 13, 2017. If El Dorado County receives Prop 47 funding, LAC members will be required to attend quarterly evening meetings to oversee Prop 47 grant implementation throughout the year for three years.

Meeting will be held at El Dorado County Probation Department,
CCC Classroom,
3974 Durock Road, Ste 205, Shingle Springs, CA 95682

Friday, January 13, 2017, from 1:30pm to approximately 4:00pm

David Joe Atteberry, September 14, 1966 - January 5, 2017.  Arrangements under the direction of Rogue Valley Funeral Alternatives, Medford, OR.

Shellie Cook wrote: "I'm so very sorry to hear of the passing of an old high school friend, David Atteberry. Dave was in the first graduating class at Oak Ridge High School and was the first quarterback of it's football team, an amazing pitcher on the baseball team and starting guard on the basketball team. Dave was involved in student counsel and a lot of campus activities. But more importantly he was a super nice guy and really fun to be around. David Atteberry could always make you laugh and it was a pleasure to go through high school with him. I pray for his family and friends that have been close to him over the years."

Chris Irish aded, "Very sad news of a total badass athlete from high school, baseball, basketball, football. You name it, Dave was great at it. What sticks in my mind about Dave, is that his gift of athleticism never went to his head, he was just a down to earth all around great person. RIP Dave Atteberry!"

Volunteers Sought for Senior Nutrition Site in Cameron Park

Volunteer Training is January 18, 2017.

The El Dorado County Senior Nutrition Program plans to soon re-open its Senior Nutrition meal site in Cameron Park and is now looking for volunteers.  Training for potential volunteers will be held on January 18, 2017, at 1:00 p.m. at the Cameron Park Community Center, in the Social Room, located at 2502 Country Club Drive, Cameron Park. Volunteers are needed in various roles, such as helping in the kitchen, serving meals in the dining room and signing in seniors.

The Senior Nutrition Program provides nutritious lunchtime meals for people age 60 and older for a suggested donation of $3 per meal. Currently, the nutrition program provides meals for seniors at seven congregate meal sites throughout the County, including in Placerville, El Dorado Hills and South Lake Tahoe.

The County plans to re-open its senior nutrition site at the Cameron Park Community Center within the next 30 to 60 days, according to Michelle Hunter, program manager with El Dorado County Senior Services. The site was temporarily discontinued in November 2016 due to a shortage of volunteers.

“We truly believe in this program and are very excited about the opportunity to again offer this service to our seniors in Cameron Park,” said Hunter. “We greatly appreciate our partnership with the Cameron Park Community Services District in this effort.”

For more information about the Senior Nutrition Program, or for a current list of meal sites, please visit www.edcgov.us/hhsa.  Individuals with questions may also call (530) 621-6160.  Senior Nutrition is a program of the El Dorado County Health and Human Services Agency.

Raising animals is beautiful (most days)...

Talia Cormack in the southern part of El Dorado county wrote: "I remember a post a year ago on here about how not enough people list the sorrows of homesteading. You see a lot of the rosy perspective and very little of the tragedies. Im posting to share a sad event on our farm.

A couple of days after Christmas we did as we always do and fed some scraps to our hogs who were energetic, healthy, bright eyed. We came home six hours later to two stiff, dead, year old, 200 lb gifts. We were very confused as they were so healthy when we left.

It was surreal, felt a little like a bad dream that we were waiting to wake from. We struggled to understand the event, we thought food poisoning or secondary poisoning from a dead barn rat (found a dead half eaten rat in the muck). We couldnt explain it or wrap our brains around it as nothing had changed from our normal care.

We thought about how to handle the bodies, (we dont have a backhoe here), we called the dump to ask about disposal ($35 per body) and we called UC Davis animal hospital who charges $70 per autopsy and include disposal. Well we wanted answers and were willing to drive a bit to gain some understanding and insight into what we had done wrong and pay a little extra to learn.

A few hours after we returned home from UCD we were told that both pigs died the same exact way. It wasnt toxins, or poisoning. The answer was so random even the vet who did the autopsy was confounded and said she'd never seen it before.

Both pigs died of aphyxia. She stated that chopped corncobs (appx 2" long each piece) were found at the trachea of both gilts which explained the marks in the mud that looked almost like they died seizing. Its a little difficult to try and process the meaning of an event like this.

Death is part of farm life and we are learning that relatively regularly. With all the animals on the farm chickens, turkeys, pigs, goats we have seen our share of explainable deaths. This felt even more tragic to us because of the sheer random nature of the deaths, and the waste, and the lost year, and the investment of emotion in our farm. I wanted to share before the new year to leave this in 2016 and start the year fresh. We are grateful for UC Davis Animal Sciences program for helping us learn from our mistakes. We will try pigs again but in the meanwhile we'll take a little time off and let the space lay fallow until we can muster up the gumption to start over."

A friend asked me to respond to Talia's story. I thought this response by Kate Lambert to a different story was most appropriate:"A friend asked me to respond to this article, written by a PETA volunteer.

At first, I wanted to paint a picture of my boys playing with a newborn baby lamb, or a girl sleeping in the pen with her steer after a hard day in the show ring in an attempt to prove her wrong.

But the problem is, on her main point, she is not wrong.

She claims FFA and 4H are not teaching the romanticized version of raising animals to our kids.

We aren't.

Organizations like PETA love for us to tell the romantic stories of livestock.  Because the more we do, the more they can profit from spinning our stories.

But the reality is, raising animals isn't romantic.  She talks about a mother pig singing to her piglets while she nurses them. I wonder, has she ever witnessed the same mother pig eat one of her piglets for reasons unknown to us?  Has she ever watched that 500 pound sow roll over on half her litter, killing them instantly and then push their little dead bodies out of the way to get to her food?

Has she ever watched a ewe relentlessly paw a newborn lamb until she kills him?

Has she ever dried off, warmed and comforted a baby calf whose mother delivered him on the back side of the pasture and then left, not looking back once?

No. She hasn’t, because she doesn’t raise livestock.  In fact, her organization doesn’t even run a single animal shelter.

Kids in 4H and FFA have seen this.  And they develop compassion for their animals in spite of the reality of animal nature (which often is very cruel).   Raising animals is beautiful most days.   But sometimes it's the exact opposite and our kids know that.

She is also right that most animals will end up in the food chain. And as she laid out so well, there is nothing kind about eating animals.

There is nothing mean about it either.  The bear is not considered mean when he invades a rabbit den and consumes an entire litter of week old rabbits.  A tiger is not considered cruel when he starts eating his prey before she has even died.

I take pride in the fact that humans show more compassion in our protein consumption than animals do (another thing that serves to remind us animals and humans are not equal, not the same).

We work very hard to raise animals in a clean, healthy and safe environment.  We bond with them while they are here, we provide everything they need.  And when the time comes, we kill them in as humane a way possible and consume them (after they are dead of course).

Is that kind?  No, not really.  Is it cruel?  No.  It's a fact of life.

As long as God keeps giving us two rows of teeth, I will take that as a sign we are supposed to consume our protein as a steak (or preferably a lamb chop).

So yes.  Our kids are probably hardened from raising livestock.  When my boy has to say goodbye to the lamb he showed all summer, his heart will toughen a bit.  In the same way it will when he has to bury his first dog, when he suffers through his first breakup, and when he gets his first paycheck and realizes how many dollars are taken for taxes.

Life isn't romantic and neither is raising livestock.  Which is exactly why kids leaving 4H and FFA are more prepared to succeed on the road ahead of them than their counterparts, who are often spoon fed a fairy tale version of reality."

Kate Lambert.

Improving Oral Health for Amador County Children

$
0
0

By Gregg Fishman.

The best county programs address an intractable problem with an innovative, sustainable, and collaborative solution that gets to the heart of the matter—or in the case of Amador County—to the “root” of the matter.  They take oral health care seriously in Amador County because the water isn’t fluoridated. Now, maybe that doesn’t sound like a huge problem, but tooth decay and cavities are nothing to smile about, and fluoride protects teeth—especially children’s teeth—from those preventable problems.

As Doctor David Stone from the Sutter-Amador Pediatric clinic told us, “Having a cavity is just like having any other infection in your body. You don’t eat as well, you can’t sleep well, and you can’t concentrate in school.” So, there is good reason to take oral health seriously, especially for children. Amador County developed a program to protect children’s teeth with a fluoride application when they come in for their well-child checkups and vaccinations.

The Amador County Oral Health Task Force already had a program to apply a fluoride varnish, literally painted on the teeth. Numerous studies show the varnish helps prevent cavities just as effectively as fluoridated water. It’s simple, painless, and inexpensive compared to the cost of cavities down the line. However, there are not enough dentists in Amador County, especially those who accept Denti-Cal payments, to offer this type of oral health prevention services to everyone who needs it. The task force, part of the county’s First 5 program, had to get creative.

The fact that the Oral Health Task Force already existed made things a little easier. They had a framework to explore options.  Task force members learned that Medi-Cal would reimburse the cost of applying fluoride varnish if it was done as part of a well-child visit to the doctor’s office. They applied for a small grant from the Sutter Medical Foundation and began working with the local Sutter Pediatric clinic to develop a protocol and billing system.

As it turns out, the protocol was easy. The Jackson Creek Dental Group trained the staff at the Sutter Pediatric clinic how to apply the varnish during well-child visits. It takes just a couple of minutes. The billing was only a little more difficult to figure out, but once they had a system in place, it all just flowed together. When we visited Amador County to learn more about this program, that’s what we kept hearing, how everyone collaborated to make it work, with no thought about territory or who would get the credit.

The results are impressive. In the first eight months of the program, they more than tripled the number of children receiving the fluoride varnish. The program is simple, sustainable, and it leverages existing resources. Best of all, it can be replicated in other counties that may be facing similar hurdles to preventative oral health care. That alone is worth smiling about—and thanks to the program, the children of Amador County have just the pearly whites for the job.

Placerville, CA – The Shingle Stprings Health & Wellness Center was presented with the highest honor bestowed by the California State Assembly.  Former Assemblywoman Beth Gaines presented a copy of Assembly Resolution 2535 dated Nov. 30, 2016, to Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians Chairman Nicholas Fonseca and the Tribal Council.  This prestigious honor is, “In recognition of the positive impact it has made in the lives of countless families and individuals throughout El Dorado County and the surrounding area.”  Chairman Fonseca presented Gaines with a traditional Tribal necklace for her years of service to the community.

The Shingle Springs Health & Wellness Center provides medical, dental and behavioral health services to thousands in El Dorado County and the surrounding areas.  The Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians’ mission is to provide excellent, high-quality care to the area’s underserved and treats Native and non-Native patients.

In 2016, 85 percent of the Center’s patients were indigent or on Medi-Cal.  The Center is one of only two healthcare clinics in the county to accept Medi-Cal and is the main provider for Denti-Cal patients in the county.  The Shingle Springs Health & Wellness Center is also a key provider for desperately needed mental health service.

Dry Diggings Distillery "Would go again for the tasting!"

Charlie L -- Had a great visit here. The location of the distillery is in a business/industrial park, which threw me for a loop initially, but once inside the experience came to life. The rooms were decorated with authentic gold-rush themes and had a very distinct and fun vibe.

Cris, the owner, gave a very detailed and impassioned tour and history of the facility. This was the first time of the three distilleries I've been to where I felt like I received a thorough grasp of the distilling and aging processes.

Last but not least, the tasting was great. We had a large group (20+) and Cris gave us a taste and explanation of multiple liquors and how they are procured. Overall, it was great to spend the afternoon with a knowledgeable and passionate distiller and I'd highly recommend giving it a tour.

SpiritLilly OF Georgetown, California WROTE: “Historical Classical and Great Alcohol”

It's a challenge to find Dry Diggings, but it sure is worth it. You'd never know when you drive up in front of an industrial park, that inside was the most charming, historical ambiance of a part saloon and part distillery you could find. The bottles are just classic old west and collectors items. There's a great history behind the interior décor, and even a gift shop with all sorts of items you would never think of - like flavored sugars, pancake syrups, food flavorings, and BBQ sauce! Opinion - Here’s What Motivates ‘Never Trump’ Conservatives and Why They Are So Rare

$

Everyone loves a winner. Most of us intrinsically understand and accept this as a fundamental human truth. And yet, through the course of this strangest of years, it has still been rather jarring to see so many respected conservatives pretend that liberal conman Donald Trump is remotely one of us, or even modestly qualified to be president of the United States.

This phenomenon first began when Trump appeared certain to win the GOP nomination, accelerated once that was official, and has now exploded after his shocking victory over a highly unpopular opponent who got at least two million more votes than he did. Even ardent Trump critics like Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio, Mitt Romney, Paul Ryan, and Nikki Haley, among others, have now turned into basically full-fledged supporters of a guy they all know to be a fraud who shares few, if any, of their previously pronounced principles.

Each of them has slightly different motivations and it is quite possible that they are simply playing a public game in order to navigate their own perilous political waters and/or doing what they think is in the best interest of their party/country. However, the idea that moderate Ohio Governor John Kasich would end up being about the only major Republican to not sell out his principles for short-term political expediency is almost as big a surprise as Trump’s win itself.

Last night in Iowa, Trump actually mocked what is left of the “Never Trump” movement, saying it was on a “respirator.” He might have been being unusually generous in his description of his antagonists.

As I wrote early and often in this cycle, the “conservative” media was far quicker than the political class to abandon everything they claimed to believe in so that they could feed from the ratings trough of “Trumpsanity.” The order of this conservative betrayal was fairly easy to understand because politicians go where the votes are, while media personalities gravitate to where the audience is. Politicians only respect numbers large enough to win (in Trump’s case, barely more than 46%), while in this era of unprecedentedly fragmented era, media members get basically orgasmic over capturing 5-10% of the adult population.

So the vast majority of the “conservative” media was already riding the Trump Train before his general election miracle. Now, having dodged the bullet of having helped maybe the only candidate Hillary Clinton could have beaten get the nomination, even most of the relatively token “conservative” media opposition to Trump has been washed away by the tidal wave of his coming presidency (for instance, Joe Scarboroughwho has held literally every position regarding Trump humanly possible, now seems to be effectively part of his transition team). Ironically/tellingly, only early Trump sycophants Ann Coulter and Sarah Palin have shown any buyer’s remorse and gone gently in the other direction as they begin see that they (surprise!) may have been used/conned by this fake billionaire.

While there are still a few stubborn stragglers like me who condemn Trump regularly, we are fast becoming seen as being much like those stray Japanese soldiers who never accepted the surrender which ended World War II. So I figured there might be some value in trying to explain why it is that I for one have not joined the ranks of the “winners.”

First, let me acknowledge that I fully understand the confusion. Why in the world would a conservative in the media openly oppose Trump when he has saved the country from Hillary Clinton and seems poised to “Make America Great Again”? Heck, multiple polls out just this week show that a solid ¾ of Republicans now suddenly hold formerly liberal positions on the role of government with regard to business and trade, simply because they appear to be Trump’s opinions as well. Trump’s popularity, while still historically low for a president-elect, has never been higher among conservatives, or the general population.

In short, trying to sell anti-Trumpism to “conservatives” is currently about as viable as peddling beef to vegans. No one wants to even hear what you have to say because it literally makes them feel queasy.

In an era when popularity drives EVERYTHING in the news media (What’s trending? How many retweets? How many likes? How many shares? How were the overnight ratings?), it seems impossible that someone would take a position they know will make them unpopular within their own “tribe.” Therefore it is presumed that they either must be not thinking straight, or they have an ulterior motive.

As a marginal “media member” (though my weekly national radio, this column, and my social media platforms) I have always be frustrated by the understandable reality that most people in my business are rightly perceived as having an “angle.” Because of this, it is usually presumed that we ALL must have an “angle,” even when it isn’t overtly obvious what it might be. In fact, often times if you take a particularly unpopular position it is seen somehow as proof that there MUST be a hidden agenda somewhere because no one in the media would knowingly do something against their own self-interest.

Think about that for a moment. This perfectly warranted cynicism of the media runs so deep now that when someone takes the rare principled stand against self-interest, it is presumed that there must be a “catch” somewhere. In effect, this means that it is literally impossible to take a productive stand on principle because very few people will accept that this is what you are really doing (my first experience with people not “getting” this was when I broke off my alliance with Sarah Palin because I, correctly, perceived that she was planning to sabotage the cause of beating President Obama in 2012).

With me, there is clearly no financial or career motive here. My radio show will likely be going away, or at least ending its broadcast component, largely because my position on Trump cripples the show’s ability to grow or remain economically viable. My career as a conservative documentary filmmaker is also now surely shelved at least until Trump is out of office, partly because Fox News Channel will never book me again. Meanwhile, most of the shows at MSNBC or CNN are understandably scared of me thanks to my days as a “Palin Defender.”

Some people seem to think that I haven’t shifted my position on Trump (actually, having seen him in action as president-elect, while there are some things I like and I am still hoping for the best, may have made me even more anti-Trump) after his victory for psychological reasons. According to my detractors, I don’t want to admit that I was wrong about Trump and I am hoping to be able to say “I told you so.”

While I have plenty of personality flaws, and am stubborn enough to stick to a position I believe in for a very long time with a very limited reward, this is not an accurate perception. I know this, mainly, because it is my belief that, with any luck at all, it is going to be a VERY long time before there will ever be the chance for a true “I told you so” on Trump. I am confident that by then I will be either gone from the public scene, or that it will too far removed for anyone to remember or give a damn what a minor figure like me warned, in vain, about Trump.

So what is my motivation? Simply to tell the truth about someone whom I believe, when history is finally written, will be seen as the man who ended conservatism as a real force in this country and who fundamentally altered, for the worse, our very system of governance.

While there are plenty of short-term elements regarding Trump which worry me, I actually think he’s likely to do some very good things and might be rather popular for a while. It is in the longer-term where I am most confident Trump will cause real damage. I see his election as the moment our politics officially left the gravitational pull of the rational Earth forever, and therefore there is no rational way to predict where, now that we are completely untethered to logic or truth, this will eventually lead us.

I just know that it will be bad. Probably very bad. And that someone who is not a liberal should be screaming as loud as they can about what is happening, regardless of the consequences. Maybe because I have less left to lose than most in this business, I am one of those still willing to do so. Regardless, while I still hope that I will be wrong about Trump, I can assure you that I’m 100% sincere.
