The day World War II came to Placerville - January 29, 1943

(Ron Briggs)

January 29, 1943 is when Placerville entered its name in the long list of cities suffering World War II casualties. It happened in a small field nestled between the Brandon and Wallace Ranch’s off Highway 49 1 ½ miles off Wallace Road four mile north of Placerville half way to Coloma.

Around 3 pm Captain Lawrence Wagner lifted his Mitchell B-25D US Army Air Corps bomber off from Hammer Field in Fresno at 3 pm heading to Medford, Oregon then onward to home at McChord Field near Tacoma, Washington. He and his officers: co-pilot 1st Lt Alto Dolan and bombardier 2nd Lt Dennis Sattler sat through an 8 am weather briefing indicating inclement weather ahead with icing conditions between 6,000 and 15,000 feet. They decided to return to the afternoon weather briefing to see if conditions had changed, they hadn’t. However, the weather officer suggested flying over the storm at 20,000 feet for the majority of the one and a half hour flight would enable the bomber to safely fly over the inclement weather. Capt Wagner said if things got too rough they could turn bail and with a smile said “we can always bail out”.

At 2:35pm the decision to go was made and the plane lifted off shortly before 3pm. Staff Sergeant Harold Glarum was the flight engineer; 2nd Lt. D.O. Stattler was the navigator; in radio operator chair sat Technical Sgt Robert Morris and four feet away S/Sgt Robert Huddleston sat in the top gun turret and S/Sgt George Ostrowski was furthest back in the tail, sitting near the exit. Their cargo consisted of military supplies and munitions.

The plane immediately climbed to 8,500 breaking through first layer of clouds minutes later as they approached Sacramento the plane entered back into the storm and began ascending to 17,500 feet just five minutes from Redding Capt Wagner decided the weather ahead was just too dangerous and headed his plane back to Fresno.

In his effort to get above the clouds the plane reached 21,000 feet but they were still in the clouds they crew began getting cold and some of the men did not have oxygen mask which had been stored on a platform beyond the bomb bay doors and Glarum could not get to them. Capt Wagner descended the plane to 18,000 flying into ice, sleet and snow. Glarum reported the de-icers were working fine. Huddleston however saw ice forming on their vertical stabilizers showing Ostrowski and Morris who asked if the Capt “was aware of it”? The plane continued dropping to 10,000 feet into the heart of the storm. Glarum said “the storm was tossing us around something terrible!”. Huddleston added “The ship began to act up plenty!”. The rudder and elevators began freezing up with ice. Capt Wagner and co-pilot Dolan battled to control the plane when suddenly, it went into a dive. Any item in the plane not locked down went flying around toolboxes, papers and eventually equipment from the floor slammed into the ceiling and hung there. Morris and Huddleston also left the floor as they too were toss about.

The plane reached 550mph screaming downward. It took both Wagner and Dolan to pull their yokes back to pull out of the dive successfully. But they were still deep into the storm as everything was freezing up the pilots feverishly worked to keep the plane straight. The air speed indicator flight indicator, gyral compass and radio had died. Capt Wagner knew he was low about 6,000 feet and not sure of its exact location. He did know he was flying blind without his instruments, near mountains, and no longer in control. It was time to get out.

Around 4:15 pm Capt Wagner gave the order to abandon ship. He motioned to the guys in back to get out and told Dolan to get the guys in front. Glarum saw Dolan get out of his seat, but then Glarum was thrown to the ceiling and back down to the floor. Dolan told Glarum to pull emergency hatch. He managed to do this and was thrown back to the ceiling and then right back to the hatch. Sattler pushed his way past Glarum and jumped out. Glarum fell down again but got a foot out of the hatch and found himself tumbling out of the plane. Dolan followed. In the back, things were just as chaotic Huddleston saw the Captain give the order to jump and groped his way back to tell Ostrowski to pull the emergency exit handle. Ostowski wrenched it open and followed as Huddleston crawled out. Glarum was drifting in his parachute when he heard the explosion and when he came out of the clouds he saw the burning airplane below him.

At 550 mph the inverted bomber went straight down creating a crater 30 to 40 feet deep. Glarum saw orange flames and witnessed “machine gun ammo exploding”. At impact the destruction of the aircraft was total. Capt Wagner and radio operator T/Sgt Robert Morris did not make it. Their remains were found at the site. They did not die in combat nor in a distant land, they died serving their country in Clyde Wallace’s field around 4:15pm, 29-1-43.

Sattler was the first out of the plane and also heard the big ship explode as he was riding his parachute landing near a farm house in the Cold Springs area and was taken to Placerville by a farmer. Glarum rode his parachute about three minutes. He saw a couple houses on the way down and after landing in the brush went uphill to find the houses as men from the houses shouted assistance around 9 pm they took him to the Sheriff Office in Placerville.

Dolan, Huddleston and Ostrowski all drifted to the northeast across the South Fork of the American River Canyon and landed in the Kelsey area. Members of the El Dorado Posse found all three by 9:30 pm. Only five of the seven crew members were accounted for.

The B25 carried the top secret Norton bomb site and after the bodies of Capt Wagner and T/Sgt Morris the Army arrived to recover and secure the crash site with help from local authorities. The debris field was wide and souvenirs were taken by all who could.

In April of 1943 Captain Wagner was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross posthumously and was presented to his father. It was felt that Wagner had saved the lives of the five of his crew by giving the order to bail out.

The majority of the above was written by Monte Hendricks “Bomber Field”

For me when I first moved to Clyde Wallace’s ranch in 1971 my friend Fred Cook who’s family owned the Brandon Ranch told me stories about the crash and even had souvenirs in his barn. When I moved back to my family’s farm, the Wallace Ranch in 1996, Kelly and I began full time farming and I always thought the crash occurred on Freds’ place.

After Monte Hendricks shared his story and research material it unraveled a mystery of why in one location of our 100 acre farm did loamy decomposed granite exist. Clyde Wallace, while sympathetic to the tragedy forced the Army to fill the crater made in his field, so the Army trucked up hundreds of thousands of pounds of material from Sacramento.

Next to our cherry orchard we planted in 1980 was a large undulation with loamy decomposed granite when the rest of the farm was rich deep dark topsoil. It never occurred to me this was the crash site my friend Fred spun stories over.

Monte Hendricks is an avid cross country skier whose hobby is finding lost crash sites. His wife Julie was a teacher at Markham middle school who taught all of our sons. Monte called to disclose his discovery and share the story.

I decided to remind all of us who live in El Dorado County that on January 29, 1943 two airmen became World War II casualties on Wallace Road four miles north of Placerville.

All of El Dorado County salutes you Captain Lawrence T. Wagner of Troy, Kansas and Technical Sergeant Robert L. Morris, heroes of World War II. Rest in Peace.

Why California’s Silly Secession Scheme Can’t Succeed

$

(Kurt  Schlichter, Townhall)

America’s dopey adolescent California is sulking because Hillary lost, so now it’s talking big about moving out of Mom’s house. According to one local bison, who presumably speaks for much of the proggy herd, the rest of America is unworthy of the Golden State’s glorious presence anyway.

I’m a resident of California, and I say, “Great – pack your crap and get out.” As tempting as it is to keep you in the Union as a cautionary example of what happens when liberals run everything, the pain you would suffer running away from home would be so overwhelming that it might even teach you hapless denizens of this ridiculous state a much-needed lesson. So, go for it.

Now, I’ve previously explored the whole idea of America breaking up both here in Townhall and in my new novel People’s Republic, which features the M4-oriented hero infiltrating blue America and finding Venezuela without the charm (This spring, look for its even more proactive prequel Indian Country). But now that the local nimrods seem to be at least semi-serious about putting the question of whether the Golden State should stay or go on the 2018 ballot, perhaps this is as good a time as any to do something that liberals really, truly hate.

Let’s confront them with facts by walking through how their stupid secession idea would actually work in the real world.

Now, let’s assume the separation would be peaceful. It would have to be – I’m thinking that the declining number of the kind of people who pick up rifles still living here would not be psyched to die so San Franciscans can ensure that illegal alien hobos are able to defecate on the street unmolested and that people who misgender via their pronoun use can be incarcerated. The typical California social justice warrior would make a poor warrior warrior. It would have to be an amicable divorce. So, California is an independent country with about 40,000,000 people. What now?

Well, let’s talk about food. Where’s it going to come from? The Central Valley is a remarkably fertile area. All sorts of stuff will grow there – except, it doesn’t anymore because California has decided to stop stockpiling water and has prioritized flushing what water it does have out into the sea for the benefit of bait fish. The California water system was sufficient when we had 20 million folks, but decades ago we stopped building dams and reservoirs because of Gaia or something. So, to eat, California would need to change its priorities from tadpoles to people, or become a net importer of food.

Oh, and that Colorado River water that quenches LA’s thirst? Yeah, the United States is probably going to need that. But you can still get some of that H2O – in the form of food grown in the USA that you now have to import. Except grapes. We have lots of grapes. Can’t make bread with them though.

And then there’s fossil fuels. We know you want to go green because of your bizarre weather panic religion, but that’s a lot of infrastructure to build (and, as we will see, you’re going to be short on cash), so for now you’re stuck with dino juice. Since you’ve pretty much banned fracking and limited oil production (and I bet you’ll be shutting down those rigs off the Santa Barbara coast because rich libs hate looking at them), you’ll need to import oil. A lot of oil. The good news is the USA will have plenty to sell you.

In fact, the USA will have plenty of everything to sell you since you’ve largely driven manufacturing out of California with your regulations and taxes. Who makes cars in California? Well, Tesla, sort of – except its big new battery plant is in Nevada. And generating power? The USA will be happy to oblige since your climate change scam laws will essentially require you to outsource your greenhouse gas emissions – and the USA will be delighted to let you pay it for the privilege.

But hey, California still has entertainment and technology! Except much of the entertainment industry has already been driven out of SoCal by costs and regulations – wonder why the credits on all the TV shows you watch tell you they are filmed in Vancouver, Georgia, New Mexico, or somewhere other than Hollywood? Even the porn industry is hitting and quitting Cali! But you still have the tech companies that are stubbornly clinging to California; I hear Twitter is doing great. Oh, right. And those companies hire what – a few thousand genderfluids named Kaden? They may make rich punks richer, but other than that, nada. Well, perhaps you can still partially offset your stunning trade deficit with exports of karma and synergy.

Let’s talk spending. Don’t think California gets to just leave behind its >10% share of the $20 trillion dollar Obama-enhanced national debt. Here’s an invoice for $2 trillion. And we already talked about the California military – with >10% of the population, will it pick up 10% of the current $582.7BN defense budget? That’s $58BN on top of the current $167BN budget – ouch. Now, California might be tempted to free ride on the more martial USA, but that is going to engender some bad blood. Do you really want to tick off the people who feed and fuel and defend you?

Now, those 40 million California citizens are also going to be expecting their Social Security and Medicare and government federal pensions and all the rest of the goodies they think they’ve earned. Guess who gets to scratch that itch? Let’s not forget California’s own existing bond and pension debt – the rest of America won’t be around to help you with that. Plus, the all-Democrat legislature is going to be hard-pressed to turn down any deadbeat constituency looking for a handout, and a third of America’s deadbeats live in California now. It’s already well on its way to becoming America’s dead weight.

Not wanting to be oppressive to people who shouldn’t be there in the first place, California is going to want to legalize all the zillions of illegals currently living here. And when it does, since immigration laws are racist or something, more uninvited folks will be showing up as California becomes Mexico’s Spare Bedroom. Even if it keeps all the income taxes its residents pay to the feds now, California is still going to have to come up with a lot more dough. Sure, an independent California can run a deficit, but after Greece, who is going to lend tens of billions to Sacramento – except at crushingly high interest rates?

So taxes get to go up. California’s income tax on the wealthiest (who aren’t actually that wealthy when you realize a shack a couple miles from the beach costs $1 million plus) is something like 11%. The current top federal rate is about 39% (with no state tax deduction anymore!), so assuming that dough goes to Uncle Moonbeam, you are at a 50% rate before local taxes and without considering payroll/self-employment taxes. That’s still not enough to pay for California’s progressive utopia.

Taxes need to rise. Of course, the really rich can suck it up (or, more likely, shelter their income), and the poor don’t pay income taxes anyway. So that leaves the already depleted middle class to pick up the tab. But the few remaining middle class Californians are more likely to pick up and leave – after all, plenty of their pals from California are in Austin already and at least there they can afford a house outside the ghetto. Guys like me – a lawyer who prospers because of the state’s idiotic regulatory regime – will milk this Cal until it’s dry and then take off to sunny, low-tax Florida with our loot. So, California will become, even more than it already is, a place consisting of a few really rich people and a lot of poor ones. Not really a recipe for long term stability and prosperity – sure you want to forgo an army?

And then there are the substantive changes the extreme lefties left in charge would make. Bathroom antics and mandatory cake baking are just the beginning. Does anyone think a California unrestrained by the Constitution will retain unchanged any of the liberties enumerated in the Bill of Rights? Think of an independent California as a giant college campus that is a country – who in Sacramento will resist the inevitable call to criminalize “hate speech” and “racism” and “sexism?” Of course, those words simply mean anything progressives dislike – look for censors in the form of “Bias Review Commissions” and the like scrutinizing every word you utter.

Freedom of religion? Come on. Do you think they won’t legislate the content of religious teachings? You’ve met liberals, right? They’re aching to destroy the alternate pole of power that religion represents. Watch “hate churches” – by which they mean ones that actually follow Jesus’s teachings – get stripped of their tax exemptions. The bankruptcies and tax sales that follow will not be bugs – they will be features.

And as for the Second Amendment – don’t make me laugh. Crime will run rampant (hell, it already is) because the left sees criminality as a valid expression of oppressed peoples, and opposition to it as pure bigotry. But fear not – the rich will still be safe behind their walls and armed guards. Everyone else? Too bad, so sad.

But for all the big talk, California will never try to secede. It’s dumb, but not that dumb. The clowns in Sacramento fully understand that the folly and foolishness that flourishes on the left coast is an indulgence of, and made possible only by, the patience of better Americans in the rest of the country. California is just lucky that Mom has so much patience with its nonsense, and that she will let it keep crashing on the futon down in the basement in the likely vain hope that someday it will get its stuff together and grow the hell up.

Political Commentary -- Jefferson Says "No Go" to Calexit

$

[Terry Gherardi]

Last week, Calexit received the go ahead to collect signatures, to place an initiative for the secession of California from the United States, on the 2018 ballot. The group has until July 25th, to secure approximately 600,000 registered voters signatures.

Leading the charge for Calexit is Louis Murillo and the new California National Party. Calexit is an arm of Yes California. The 30-year old, Murillo, is originally from New York and moved to California in 2006. Although he is listed as a resident of San Diego, he currently lives in Russia, teaching English in a Russian school.  Recently, Murillo announced he was attempting to open a California embassy in Moscow.  Reportedly, Calexit has the support of the Russian government and Murillo often appears on Russian Television.

The State of Jefferson opposes Calexit and is quick to point out the differences between the two. Jefferson is seeking equal representation, which thus far has gone ignored, even though tens of thousands of phone calls, letters, Faxes and emails have gone out, requesting a resolution or bill be introduced by the State Legislature, to restore the representation that existed in California, prior to 1964. Today, eleven rural northern counties are represented by one senator, while the county of Los Angeles (1 county) has 15 senators. It is obvious to most, that those representing the greater Los Angeles area and San Francisco Bay Area, have no intention of relinquishing their power to allow fair/equal representation to the rural citizens of Northern California.

This is why Jefferson supporters feel they have no other choice but to "separate" from the State of California, as allowed under Article IV, Section 3 of the U.S. Constitution. They are not looking to "secede" from the United States. Jeffersonians want to remain in the union, with Old Glory flying overhead, living under the freedoms, rights and liberties, guaranteed under the laws of the U.S. Constitution.

Calexit’s proposal would strike the language from the California Constitution, defining the State as "an inseparable part of the United States of America and that the U.S. Constitution is the supreme law of the land." If the initiative qualifies for the 2018 State ballot and is passed by the voters, then a special election would be held in 2019, placing the question of "whether or not California should become a separate country."

Calexit's next hurdle for secession, would require an amendment to the U.S. Constitution, with a vote by both houses of Congress and then ratification by the States.  Legal challenges are also predicted.

The State of Jefferson began drafting their Constitution in November. Hundreds have also attended two Formation Assembly's where committees were formed, and proposed policy's for the governance of Jefferson were reviewed, to include: "A balanced budget will be a Constitutional mandate. Debt will be limited to dire emergency as defined by a 2/3 vote of the legislature and a majority popular vote. Debt will be limited by the Constitution to five years. Both unfunded liabilities and eminent domain will be Unconstitutional. "

Jefferson offers a business friendly state, with a zero corporate tax rate. Jefferson will be led by a governor, with a part-time legislature, represented by a Senator from each county. Each legislator will only be allowed to introduce one law per legislative cycle. Currently the California legislature passes about 800 to 900 new laws per year, causing California's government to grow even larger, with more regulations and burdensome taxes, managed by employees of 570 State agencies & departments. In June of 2016, CalPers unfunded liability totaled $l.4 trillion and CalStirs $200 billion. These unfunded liabilities continue to plague counties and cities budgets.

Jefferson can successfully manage the state's business with 50 or less agencies, leaving the bulk of decision making and spending to local county governments, including education. Federal monies coming to the state will be apportioned to the counties. One example is Federal highway money. This is money used to fund Cal-Trans. Jefferson will give the money to counties and the State will only supply engineering advice to maintain State Responsibility roads.

Thus far, there is very little mentioned regarding the governing policies of Calexit. We do know the chief leader will be a President, not a Governor. There are some indications of what lies ahead, noted in their petition for secession. If voters approve, the petition requires the Governor to request California's admission to the United Nations. Financial concerns are also noted; "if California was to become an independent nation, the State and its local governments would experience major, but unknown, budgetary impacts. This measure also would result in tens of millions of one-time State & local election costs.

Calexit has received large media attention, beginning as early as last summer. News Week, published an article showing a map of the proposed nation of California.  All 58 Counties were eliminated, replaced by 16 regions, such as Calexico, Baja Joaquin, Mojave but also Jefferson. It is safe to say, that Jeffersonians do not take kindly to regional government, much less support the efforts of Murillo and Yes California.

Jefferson supports the local governments of our 21 Counties and their elected who have signed declarations/petitions now filed with the State Legislature and Secretary of State, that request equal representation and/or to "separate" from the State of California. Jeffersonians will use all methods allowed under the law, including the courts, to achieve representation and/or the formation of the 51st State. If statehood is achieved, the Jefferson Constitutional Convention will immediately convene, putting in place a government that will bind government, not the people.   Jefferson spells "Liberty" for all.

El Dorado County Residents Get a Cold Chill Looking at Heating Bill

$

0

A number of area residents reported their PG&E bills rose markedly last month.

Amy Good was feeling concerned and wrote, "Anybody know what's up with PG&E? My bill went from 160-450 with no change in use! Only change is the new year!!!!"

Brenda Reynolds added, "Mine too!
Suzanne J. Heffner, "Same.
Nikki Gardea, "Same!"
Julianna Erdman, "Same. Our bill almost tripled."
Christina Holmes-Bull, "Same! From 250 or 300 to 800!!"

Erin Herschbach Lamb, "From $500 prior winter to $945 and $1100 for us!"

The increased bills are mostly due to a jump in energy consumption, not a jump in rates, according to PG&E, the region’s main provider of electricity.

The bigger bills often cause puzzlement and consternation, even among those who expected an increase. Stacey Lundy wrote, "our usage went up because the past couple months have been colder than usual. higher usage = higher bill." Megan Wood said "Ours went way up too. I was shocked. Rates went up! Going up again in March too."

Robert Johnson warned, "In March they will start to charge a surcharge for anyone exceeding their 'baseline' usage."

The utility last summer won state approval for a gas rate increase that amounts to an average of $7 a month when calculated on an annualized basis.

Customers’ bills “remain well below the national average,” PG&E spokeswoman Deanna Contreras said in an email.

The California Public Utilities Commission is the government agency that oversees all public utilities.  http://www.cpuc.ca.gov/Contactus/

Every three years, PG&E submits a request for funding to the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) called a General Rate Case (GRC). This process includes several public hearings across the service territory, whereby the Commission gathers input from the public, as well as evidentiary hearings where PG&E and all interested parties testify in a public proceeding before an Administrative Law Judge.

[PR Pond]  The El Dorado County Senior Nutrition Program is set to re-open its Senior Nutrition meal site in Cameron Park. Beginning February 6, 2017, nutritious lunches for seniors (ages 60+) will be served on Mondays and Fridays from 12:00 to 12:30 p.m. at the Cameron Park Community Center located at 2502 Country Club Drive in Cameron Park. Each meal will be provided for the suggested donation of only $3.00.

'We are so happy to offer this service to our seniors in Cameron Park,' said Michelle Hunter, manager of El Dorado County Senior Services. 'The Senior Nutrition Program provides a great opportunity for seniors to not only get a nutritious, affordable meal, but to also stay active and connected with others in the community. We greatly appreciate our partnership with the Cameron Park Community Services District and our wonderful volunteers who are helping in this effort.'

The Senior Nutrition Program currently provides meals for seniors at seven congregate meal sites throughout the County, including in Placerville, El Dorado Hills and South Lake Tahoe. The Cameron Park site, which originally opened in fall 2015, was temporarily discontinued in November 2016 due to a shortage of volunteers. Volunteers have since been recruited and trained for the site. Volunteers serve in various roles, such as helping in the kitchen, serving meals in the dining room and signing in seniors.

For more information about the Senior Nutrition Program, including a full list of meal sites and menus, please visit www.edcgov.us/hhsa. For questions about the program, or to volunteer at one of the meal sites, please call (530) 621-6160. Senior Nutrition is a program of the El Dorado County Health and Human Services Agency.

Wintry Weekend in South Lake Tahoe

[Vanessa, from my hometown of Johannesburg now in San Francisco]

Ever since moving to San Francisco nine months ago, we have been wanting to take a trip to Lake Tahoe.  It’s only about a three and a half hour drive north east of San Francisco on the Nevada state line (in fact the state line runs right through the middle of the lake) and I’ve seen photos of friends tanning alongside the lake in Summer and now that Winter is upon us, almost everyone that you bump into is heading to Tahoe to go skiing or snowboarding.  So, having heard about how much snow has fallen over the past few weeks and with the weekend looking bright and sunny, we finally made the trip and headed up to Heavenly in South Lake Tahoe.

It’s a pretty boring drive from San Francisco to Sacramento and even for a good 50 miles thereafter but as you get beyond Placerville, you start climbing into the Sierra Nevada mountains where the spectacular views of the snowy landscape start.  The higher we got, the higher the mounds of snow on the sides of the road were and eventually they towered well above us.  We decided to pull off the main road and drove through a hamlet where icicles hung in front of the windows and the roofs were covered in so much snow it looked like they were about to collapse (and in fact the roof of a car had collapsed).  The roads were also much narrower and still covered in snow – it was like we had driven into a Winter wonderland and it was absolutely gorgeous.  Never having seen so much snow before, I immediately jumped out of the car and delighted in playing in the piles of soft, white snow!

Once we arrived in Heavenly, we got our gear and headed up the gonodola.  Having only skied once before in 2015 (with little success) I decided to take a ski lesson.  With some time to spare before the 10 o’clock start time, a ski instructor advised me to get off the gondola at the observation deck and I am so glad that I took his advice and made the stop.  The views from the observation deck are stunning and I grabbed a cup of hot chocolate to keep me warm while taking them all in.  Keep in mind that the gondola only stops at the observation deck on the way up, so if you do plan on visiting the observation deck, make sure to give yourself some spare time before you hit the slopes.

img_4540img_4539

After a morning of ski school and a few trips up the chair lift, I had had quite enough of skiing (I’ve decided that skiing really isn’t my thing) and by 1 o’clock, I was ready to take off my ski boots and jacket and sit in the sun with a drink.  We had a few drinks at Tamarack Lodge, at the top of the gondola, before heading down.  We decided to go to the lake (where I could play in the snow some more) and then drove to Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course for a late lunch.  The golf course looked gorgeous covered in snow and thanks to the fantastic happy hour (from 3 to 6) at Brooks’ Bar and Deck we spent the afternoon indulging in cheese fondue, chicken wings and red wine.  The sun was setting as we left and we managed to find a spot on the jetty and braved the cold for just long enough to enjoy the sunset over the lake.

img_4550

That evening we headed to Azul Latin Kitchen and enjoyed Mexican fare and margaritas around the open fire pit.  After a last drink at McP’s Irish pub, we decided to call it a night and snuggled up in front of the (gas) fireplace in our little room at Alpenrose Inn which was the perfect end to our wintry weekend away.

From Marijuana Mecca to Dead Zone? Calaveras Voters to Consider Commercial Pot Ban

$
0

[California County News] Is this a case of buyer’s remorse?

In October, California Marijuana Policy covered the booming cannabis industry in Calaveras County, where hundreds of marijuana growers have flocked to set up shop. Now, a massive pendulum swing could be afoot.

In May, voters in Calaveras will be given the option to approve a total ban on commercial pot growing in their county—a tremendous shift for a region currently awash in weed. The initiative, which will come via special election, was approved unanimously by supervisors last week after a petition garnered more than 5,000 signatures.

To understand this stark turnaround, you need to know how Calaveras became so cannabis-rich in the first place. After all, it was desperation rather than an affinity for marijuana that led Calaveras to adopt its urgency pot ordinance last year.

The county had been absolutely devastated by the 2015 Butte Fire, which is considered one of the most destructive in the state’s history, and it was searching for a way to boost anemic revenue. It worked. After greenlighting some 800 marijuana grows, cash flowed into county coffers. But disillusionment soon followed.

“When you’ve heard the stories I’ve heard, it rips your heart out,” said resident Bill McManus, who is pushing for the ban. “People who were brutalized by the Butte Fire and came back after it was cleaned up, ready for people to move back and they found that they were surrounded by pot growers.” The deluge, critics say, has led to crime, overwhelming odors and severe environmental damage.

Come May, voters will get a chance to send the growers packing. But they stand to lose a lot of green in more ways than one. Will they pull the trigger?

[PR Pond]

SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Business Capital has delivered $3MM growth financing for GoldLine Brands, Inc., a group that operates vineyards and wineries. The Company owns a collection of wine brands, which can be found in retail and wholesale markets in the United States, as well as overseas in Europe. Ten of these were recently entered in the world’s largest wine competition and, out of a field of nearly 7,000 wines, each GoldLine wine entered medaled, including a Gold, Double-Gold, and Best-In-Class.

The Company produces all of its brands from its winery, Myka Cellars, in Diamond Springs. Two of the Myka Cellars varietals were rated 93 and 91 points by The Wine Enthusiast in their November 2016 issue; its Coast brand was given a “Best Buy.” GoldLine Brands recently purchased 50 acres in the Pleasant Valley wine region of El Dorado for its new Rhone Wolf Vineyards and is further expanding its operations through additional tasting rooms, as well as increasing production, distribution and exports.

It is on track to become a major wine producer in El Dorado County – an up and coming wine region that will give established valley regions a challenge as an increasing number of visitors discover the unique mountain vineyards and microclimates of the Sierra foothills, the diversity and quality of wines, and more reasonable pricing.

Old Hangtown's Gold Bug Park and Mine

$

[Inspired Imperfection by Jennifer Bourn]

Every fall, for years and years, we have been driving through Placerville on our way to Apple Hill and I had no idea that Gold Bug Mine existed.

We love family adventures that teach us about California history and the gold rush, and I was blown away that there was a real gold mine that you can tour this close to our house that we had never checked out!

Old Hangtown’s Gold Bug Park & Mine sits with in the 62 acre Gold Bug Park in Placerville, California. The gold mine, stamp mill, blacksmith’s shop, and museum provide a unique look into Northern California’s Gold Rush history and the hard rock mining efforts that yielded gold from the 1860s to the 1940s when the mine closed. It is not known how much gold was removed because no records were kept.

The main attraction of Gold Bug Park is the Gold Bug Mine, a 352 foot horizontal drift on the east side of the hard rock mine. Visitors are invited to don a hard hat and take an audio tour of the mine, learning about the California Gold Rush and what is was like to be a gold miner in the mid 1800s.

On February 1, 1985, the park was approved for listing in the National Register of Historic Places and also as a State Point of Interest on the California registry.

VISITING OLD HANGTOWN’S GOLD BUG PARK & MINE

We arrived about 15 minutes before the mine opened, so we first explored the area around the mine and hike up to the entrance to the Priest Mine. When the museum opened, we headed inside to browse the artifacts and purchase our tickets for the self-guided audio tour, a hardhat, and admission to the museum, the Hendy Stamp Mill, and the blacksmith shop.

We put on our hard hats, and as we stepped onto the wooden floors inside the historic gold mine, cold air from deep inside the mountain poured over our faces and chilled our skin.

We listened as a gold miner talked about his life and the tools used to mine for gold, and walked deeper into the mine until reaching the end. The only bummer was that the audio tour sets are only for those over 10 years old, so Carter didn’t get one. He was a little upset to be missing out, so I had to repeat everything I was hearing for him.

Next, we hiked up to the blacksmith’s shop to see real blacksmiths at work and the Hendy Stamp Mill to see how gold is separated from quartz. We also got to hear stories from a living history volunteer about Black Bart robbing Wells Fargo Stage Coaches carrying gold.

After that we were starving! So we grabbed our ice chest and supplies from the truck and enjoyed a fantastic family picnic in the Liberty Pavillion before spending some time gem panning in the ice cold water. And yes, it was ice cold, even on a hot day. My fingers were freezing, but we were determined to find some treasures, and after about 30 minutes, we did!

ACTIVITIES AT GOLD BUG PARK & MINE

Pairing the many family-friendly activities at Old Hangtown’s Gold Bug Park & Mine with a picnic makes for a perfect half day family adventure.

While visiting the park, be sure to check out the following activities:

  • Gold Bug Mine, the namesake of the park, gives you the opportunity to venture deep inside the wooden floored, mountain mine on a self-guided audio tour. Those over 5’2″ in height are required to wear a hardhat, and only those 10 years and older are given audio sets.
  • The Miner’s Blacksmith Shop, located behind the Hendy Stamp Mill, features blacksmiths at work forging items that are sold at the park gift shop.
  • Priest Mine was dug into the hillside by hand in the 1850s and while you can hike up to the entrance (which is pretty cool), the mine tunnel may only be entered on a private tour.
  • The Joshua Hendy Stamp Mill, sitting in its original location, is enclosed in a stamp mill building that houses a working model of the historic stamp mill so you can see and hear it in action. There is also a mineral display, historic photographs, and mining equipment, and if you’re lucky, you’ll meet a character from the old west who will entertain you with stories of dramatic stage coach robberies by the infamous villain Black Bart.
  • Hattie’s Museum is a small but mighty museum detailing the rich history of the California Gold Rush and showcasing a small collection of mining equipment typically used in hard rock mining.
  • Hattie’s Gift Shop has a variety of gold rush related souvenirs and gifts, books about the region, and small containers to put your gems in if you decide to do some gem panning.
  • Picnic Areas are scattered throughout Gold Bug Park for you to use, and the covered Liberty Pavilion is available for group events.

  • Old Hangtown’s Gold Bug Park & Mine sits within the 62 acre Gold Bug Park located 1 mile north of Highway 50 off Bedford Avenue at 2635 Gold Bug Lane, Placerville, California 95667.
  • While Gold Bug Park is open daily from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, Old Hangtown’s Gold Bug Park & Mine has different hours. It is open daily from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm from April to October, and from 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm from November to March.
  • Gold Bug Park is owned and operated by the City of Placerville, the only municipality in the state of California to own a gold mine.
  • Parking is free and there is no entrance fee or day use fee for the park, picnic areas, and trails.
  • Admission to Gold Bug Mine ($7.00/adult, $4.00/youth, free/2 and under) includes a self-guided audio tour, a hardhat, and admission to the museum, Hendy Stamp Mill and blacksmith shop.
  • Pack a picnic lunch and after your mine tour, grab a picnic table under the shady trees or in the covered Liberty Pavilion for a peaceful picnic along the creek.
  • Gem panning in the small mining flume is available during the warmer months. Pans can be rented inside Hattie’s Gift Shop for $2.00/hour. Unlike other gem panning experiences, like the ones at Moaning Caverns and California Caverns, Gold Bug Park’s gem panning isn’t seeded and the water is dark and cloudy. It takes much more work to pan for gems at this location, but there are rewards… that is if your hands don’t freeze first!
  • Even on hot days, you’re going to want a sweater, sweatshirt, or warm layer! Inside the 352 foot mine tunnel, it gets very cold.
  • Gold Bug Mine is outfitted with a wooden floor, making this mine tour fully accessible.

Trump's Judicial Picks May Change California Legal Landscape, not just SCOTUS

$

[Placerville News Wire]

Trump could quickly appoint more than twice as many federal judges as Obama did in his first term.

The Sac Bee's editorial Board said that the political world focused Tuesday night on President Donald Trump’s live-from-the-White House announcement of his nominee for the U.S. Supreme Court, federal Appeals Court Judge Neil Gorsuch, but Trump has the chance to remake the federal judiciary far beyond the high court.

This is partly because of the Republicans that stopped Barack Obama’s Lame-Duck nominee Judge Merrick Garland in 2016. Mitch McConnell’s refusal to confirm many of President Barack Obama’s judicial nominees has set the table for Donald Trump to dramatically reshape the judiciary over the next four years, as the Republican Senate set a modern record for the fewest confirmations of lifetime judicial appointees during Obama's last two years.

Overall in the last two years of the Obama presidency, when Republicans held a Senate majority, they only confirmed 20 federal judges.  Senate Democrats became so frustrated in the last few years they changed the rules. While it still takes 60 votes to end debate and vote on Supreme Court nominees, it only requires a simple majority of 51 votes to proceed on other judicial nominations.

The rules change helped Obama eventually appoint some 330 federal judges. But it also sets the stage for Trump and Republicans, who now have 52 seats in the Senate, to flip the judiciary back in a more conservative direction.

"Trump will immediately get to fill 116 vacancies among 890 total federal judicial positions," according to the Bee. The lifetime appointments include six trial-level U.S. District Court judgeships in California and four seats on the influential 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, based in San Francisco, that oversees cases from California and eight other Western states.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California, the top Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, announced Tuesday she will oppose Sen. Jeff Sessions, Trump’s nominee for attorney general, because she has “no confidence” that he will be independent enough from the White House.

Most, if not all of Obama's nominations, will be wiped away by Trump and Senate Republicans.

Based on his campaign promises and other statements, Trump will try to stack the federal bench with judges who favor gun rights, oppose abortion rights, believe in broader presidential authority and boast the seal of approval from conservative advocacy groups.

Interestingly, despite his anti-Bush rhetoric, Trump also owes a debt to the Bush administration: Many of the Trump SCOTUS possibilities were appointed by Bush or held positions in his administration. While the Bush administration’s foreign and domestic policies remain a source of debate for Republicans today, conservatives agree that most of Bush’s judicial appointments were stellar.

The other promising sign is that Trump’s advisers have looked beyond the lower federal courts to include potential nominees from state supreme courts. State supreme-court justices will have special sensitivity to the balance between federal power and state sovereignty. Many have run for office and already know what it is like to be attacked by the Left. They may prove more immune to the pressure from the New York-Washington liberal media/academic elite that has managed to sway Justice Anthony Kennedy and other Republican appointees.

Amazon Set to Take On Advertising World Giants Google and Facebook -- Really!

$
0
0

[Bloomberg LP, Shira Ovide and Leila Abboud]

From Amazon.com Inc.'s origins as a virtual bookstore, it became an online mall for every product imaginable. Then the company stealthily built a computing utility business that now generates the majority of its profit, and it seemingly has ambitions to do muchmuch more

Without much fanfare, CEO Jeff Bezos has set his sights on yet another market: the $200 billion online advertising industry that is dominated by Alphabet Inc.'s Google and Facebook Inc. While Amazon's annual ad revenue is relatively small at an estimated $1.2 billion, the company has assembled a Google-like set of advertising tools and services that could become Amazon's next big thing.

New Money

Amazon's foray into digital advertising gives the company a fresh market to attack

First, Amazon is increasingly selling advertising on its own sprawling sites to companies that want to pitch people as they shop. Search for mascara on Amazon and users will most likely see paid product placements from makeup companies and independent merchants that want their items to stand out from the crowd.

Away from its own websites, Amazon harnesses its trove of information about people's buying and browsing habits to help other companies find potential customers everywhere they go online. The company can help a digital camera company find tech gadget enthusiasts, based on those people's Amazon habits. The company also created its own ad-selling system to help website owners auction off their slots to the highest bidder. That's wading into the territory of Google's DoubleClick, a marketplace for web video and digital billboard ads.

Amazon has been selling digital advertising for years. But it keeps broadening the scope of its efforts to the point where Amazon is starting to look a lot like Google, the world's dominant seller of online advertising with about $79 billion in 2016 ad revenue.

It's always hard to know how seriously the secretive Amazon is taking any of its many business initiatives. But people in the marketing world are buzzing that Amazon has big ambitions in online advertising. Veteran ad executives regard this with excitement and trepidation. Ad buyers would like an alternative to what they call the digital ad duopoly of Google and Facebook; on the other hand, Amazon could become a formidable competitor if it bypasses agencies and goes right to brands.

WPP Chief Executive Martin Sorrell, whose company is the biggest buyer of ad space globally, put it best at an investor conference in January: "The company that would worry me if I was a client -- or I think worries our clients, more than Google and Facebook -- is Amazon."

Minor Threat

The marketing industry is buzzing about Amazon's ambitions in online advertising, but the company is currently a tiny player in online ads

At first blush, it seems outlandish to mention Amazon in the same breath as Google and Facebook, which together swallow 58 percent of all the advertising purchased in the U.S. online or on mobile devices. Amazon's share of the U.S digital ad market was just 1.3 percent in 2016, according to research firm eMarketer.

But advertising is already a highly profitable cherry on top of Amazon's low margin e-commerce sales. It generated roughly $1.2 billion in net advertising revenue globally last year, including $940 million in the U.S., eMarketer estimates. If Amazon's U.S. ad sales generated the same operating profit margin as Facebook, that would mean advertising accounted for about $395 million in operating income for Amazon last year, or roughly 18 percent of Amazon's total operating income in the last 12 months for its North American retail business. That's not shabby for a business that most Amazon shoppers know nothing about.

NOT TOO SHABBY

And it would be unwise to underestimate Amazon's ability to grab a larger slice of the pie. Amazon has unique advantages as an advertising middleman. It knows more about people’s shopping habits than perhaps any company on earth. The company's Prime web video service means Amazon is also collecting information about the entertainment habits of millions of people. This is all highly valuable information for companies that need to gin up interest in new cars and vacation travel.

The biggest wild card is the potential connection between Amazon's digital advertising business and AWS, one of the company's crown jewels. AWS, which sells on-demand computing horsepower to companies, is already the technology backbone for big chunks of the internet advertising industry. It's possible to imagine the ubiquity of AWS helping Amazon's digital advertising business, and vice versa.

AWS is also the best example of what Amazon can accomplish in new fields. Amazon started AWS from scratch 10 years ago, and it has changed the direction of both the company and the entire technology industry. That's the kind of impact Amazon can have when Bezos applies his huge ambition in the right places.
