WINTER DRIVING IS HERE - on Busiest Travel Time of Year

$
0
0

[CHP – Placerville]

And it will hit hard and fast, on the busiest travel time of the year.

This is the first significant storm of the season. With that comes slick roads at all elevations.

Make sure you have sufficient tread depth on your tires and they are properly inflated. Check your wipers and fluid reservoir, especially if traveling in the snow, you will need to clean that windshield.

If you must travel over US-50 through the snow, a few things to remember;

1. It is not recommended you do so.
2. If you do, carry chains and know how to install them before getting on the mountain. Do NOT stop in the road to chain up.
3. If you don’t have chains, purchase them before you head up. Once you pass the city of Placerville, there are limited options. CalTrans does not sell them.
4. If you are counting on the fact that you have a 4x4/AWD car, make sure you have snow rated tires. The MINIMUM tread depth is 6/32. Regular road tires won’t cut it.  Chain and tire information-
https://dot.ca.gov/travel/winter-driving-tips/chain-controls

5. Have plenty of food, water and warm clothing. Have a way to charge your phone and even a mini shovel.
6. DRESS WARM! don’t wait til you are stuck in the snow to change out of your flip flops.

EXPECT DELAYS! It may take several extra hours. Once you are past Placerville, there are no alternate routes. Don’t follow your gps onto residential streets to bypass 50. You won’t make it anywhere. If you do venture off 50, please be respectful of the locals. Don’t use their yards as a toilet or trash can. Unfortunately we have to say this.

Please be patient, be prepared and be excellent to each other.

Travel concerns mount as heavy snow, holiday travel collide

[City of South Lake Tahoe]

South Lake Tahoe, CA- A Winter Storm Warning is still in effect for the City of South Lake Tahoe as snow removal teams work hard to keep roads clear and make this busy travel day safe for everyone.

We have plows out across the City along with two sander trucks. Crews worked overnight to keep roads as clear as possible.

“The good news is, we had no real issues overnight, but we aren’t out of the woods just yet,” said Ray Jarvis, Public Works Director, “Snowfall is expected to slow down throughout the day, but anyone who is getting on the road today needs to give themselves extra time and be careful.”

Drivers should anticipate delays and increased travel time throughout the weekend.Travel could be very difficult as conditions worsen. To check road conditions in real-time, click here. Caltrans also has up to the minute information on their Facebook page.

“The best thing you can do if you’re traveling for the holiday is leave early, and try not to be in a hurry,” said Chris Fiore, Communications Manager, “We’re expecting more snow throughout the day and the toward the end of the weekend. It’s important to stay weather aware, especially if your plans involve travel.”

Plows are already out and will continue to maintain roads as needed. When snow conditions, snowplows have the right of way on streets, and vehicles left unattended in the streets are subject to citation and/or tow. For snow safe suggestions, click here.

If you need immediate snow removal assistance, call one of the numbers below:

  • The City of South Lake Tahoe’s snow removal phone line is (530) 542-6030
  • For County residents, the snow removal phone number is (530) 573-3180.

[Sergeant Anthony Prencipe, El Dorado County Sheriff's Office]

On November 28, 2019, at around noon, the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office was dispatched to a report of a possible drowning in Meyers. It was believed that a person had fallen through the ice while walking their dogs. The search continued into the evening and detectives were able to determine that a man from Meyers was missing.

Cold weather clothing was found in the lake in the area where it was believed the person had fallen in. EDSO Dive Team, along with Douglas County Sheriff's Office Boat Team, Lake Valley Fire, South Lake Tahoe Fire, and EDSO Search and Rescue, continued to search the lake the following day.

Douglas County Sheriffs Office utilized their advanced ROV (Remote Operated Vehicle) and were able to locate and recover the deceased person, who has been positively identified as 39 year old David Schmidt. There were no signs of foul play and all signs indicate that this was a tragic accident. Next of kin notifications have been made.

David had been walking three dogs at the time. All three were rescued and taken to a local vet for treatment.

El Dorado Irrigation District: Odor Control Project Nearing Completion

[EID. Img: El Dorado Hills Wastewater Treatment Plant]

As part of El Dorado Irrigation District’s continuing commitment to provide high quality wastewater service, EID has recently completed construction of a $900,000 upgrade at the El Dorado Hills wastewater treatment plant to improve odor control capabilities.

Started in June of this year, the odor control project included installing a new biotrickling filter that replaced existing carbon scrubbers.

Odor and emission treatment systems like the new biotrickling filter rely on a biological process that involves microorganisms present in the water that are recirculated through the treatment vessel. Foul air is forced upward through the bottom of the vessel. On its way up, the air is dispersed through synthetic media and contacts water laden with microorganisms. The microorganisms metabolize the offending compounds, leaving clean air to be released from the vessel.

The new odor control unit’s biological process requires an extensive start-up procedure lasting four to six weeks. Microorganisms from the wastewater treatment plant process will be transplanted to the unit and serve as the initial biological population.

“During these startup procedures, and with current weather forecasts, the District does not foresee substantial odors escaping the facility,” said EID Senior Civil Engineer Liz Carrington.  “However, if foul odors are observed they should resolve quickly as the new process takes effect.”

If you would like to learn more about this important project, visit the project webpage "El Dorado Hills Odor Control Upgrade Project".

PLACERVILLE, Calif. (Dec. 16, 2019)   The Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians announced today that it will close its gun range in January.

The gun range, located immediately south of the interchange of Highway 50 at Shingle Springs Drive, has been open to Tribal Members and their guests for several years. Shooting hours are limited, extensive safety measures are in place, and a sophisticated, environmentally friendly bullet entrapment system was installed.

Chairwoman Regina Cuellar explains, “The Tribe is committed to the community and is dedicated to doing what is best for everyone. It is in that spirit that we made the decision to close the gun range. Following a notice to Tribal Members, the gun range will close in January.”

Other uses for the land have not been determined.

Assemblyman Kiley Statement on Supreme Court’s Decision Not to Hear Homelessness Case

[Joshua Hoover]

SACRAMENTO – Assemblyman Kevin Kiley (R-Rocklin) released the following statement today in response to the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision not to hear the appeal of Martin v. City of Boise, a landmark case that prohibits local governments from enforcing camping restrictions in public places:

“While it is disappointing that the Supreme Court denied certiorari, despite dozens of California cities supporting the petition, I’m confident that it’s only a matter of time before the Court overrules the untenable rule of law announced in the Boise case.

“In the meantime, this denial makes the work of the Legislature in the coming year even more urgent. Californians cite homelessness as the number one issue facing our state. The Legislature cannot let another year go by without dramatically improving access to shelter, mental health services, and substance abuse treatment. We also must take meaningful action to remove barriers to housing and provide law enforcement with every available tool within the boundaries of the Boise decision.

“Failure to act will only result in more tragedies for Californians who are in need, and further deterioration of our communities.”

Assemblyman Kevin Kiley represents the 6th Assembly District, which includes the Sacramento, Placer, and El Dorado County communities of Cameron Park, El Dorado Hills, Fair Oaks, Folsom, Granite Bay, Lincoln, Loomis, Orangevale, Penryn, Rocklin, Roseville, and Sheridan.

Locals Kick Off Ray Nutting's Campaign for Supervisor

[Dan Dellinger]

Cameron Park, CA – Despite the driving rain, over 100 enthusiastic local residents braved the stormy weather to show their support for Ray Nutting’s bid for re-election to the County Board of Supervisors at the Snooty Frog.  Nutting, the author of El Dorado County’s term limit ordnance, is seeking to serve again on the Board of Supervisors after taking several years off from Board service.

“When you entrusted me with a seat on the Board of Supervisors in 1993 and again in 2008, I promised to streamline and modernize our County’s Management and Operations, solve our County’s fiscal problems, stop tax increases, lower fees, and shrink County Government”, said Nutting to supporters, “I’m proud to have kept those promises, saving taxpayers millions of dollars and making bureaucrats live within the means of taxpayers like us”.

“Beyond keeping my promises to you, I led the fights to pass our No New Taxes Without Voter Approval and Right To Farm ordinances that protect you and preserve open space and family agriculture,” continued Nutting, “I succeeded in helping add a lane onto Highway 50, establish more parks and ball fields, build the Cameron Park Library, improve our fire protection, upgrade the Sheriff’s Office, and enhance senior services”.

“I’m seeking to represent you to help create new jobs, lower fees, protect Proposition 13 tax relief, find stable funding for our local fire districts, solve our spreading fire insurance and homeless crises, and help local families fix more of our problems with government agencies,” concluded Nutting, “and with your help we will apply hard work and common sense to solve these problems in a way that best fits our community, instead of some impractical one size fits all bureaucratic theory”.

Ray Nutting earned his Bachelor’s Degree in History and Criminal Justice from Sacramento State University in 1989, followed up with a California Teaching Credential in 1990, and now manages and lives on his family ranch in Happy Valley with his lovely wife Jennifer and youngest son Chase. Nutting may be reached at 530-644-1728.

The election will be held on Tuesday, March 3.

[Deputy District Attorney for the State]

All parties agreed to the extension date of Friday, Jan. 3, at 2:30 p.m.

TIME - Fri Jan 03 2020 at 02:30 pm to 04:30 pm
