Support for the legalization of marijuana has reached a new high, according to the results of a recent CBS News poll.

The poll found that 61 percent of Americans think marijuana use should be legal, while 33 percent said use of the drug should not be legal.

The percentage supporting marijuana legalization is up by five points from last year and is at the highest level recorded in the poll.

CBS News said 71 percent of Americans also oppose the federal government's efforts to stop marijuana sales and its use in states where it has been legalized.

The poll also found that 65 percent think marijuana is less dangerous than most other drugs, while only 23 percent think legalizing marijuana leads to an increase violent crime.

The CBS News poll of 1,011 was conducted by SSRS from April 11th through 15th and has a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.

But the White House previously said it expects law enforcement agents to enforce federal marijuana laws when they come into conflict with states where recreational use of the drug is permitted.

"I do believe you will see greater enforcement of it," White House press secretary Sean Spicer said in February regarding federal drug laws, which still list marijuana as an illegal substance.

The position is a reversal from the Obama administration's stance, which laid out in an official memo that the federal government wouldn't interfere in states where non-medical use of marijuana is allowed.
