Jim Ortega started his career with the Sacramento County Sheriffs Department in January of 1988. After completion of the POST basic academy, he worked assignments at the Main Jail, North Patrol, POP and Citrus Heights PD as a burglary detective. As a Sergeant, Jim served as a supervisor at the Main Jail, North Central Division and Central Division. As a Lieutenant, Jim served as a watch commander at the Main Jail and Central Division. He also served as the Assistant Commander in Field Support Division where he oversaw the 9-1-1 Communications Center, CSI Bureau and Identification Bureau. Jim also served as the Commander in the Property-Evidence Bureau and the Civil Bureau. As a Captain, Jim has served as the Main Jail Division Commander which is the largest Division within the Sacramento Sheriff's Department. He currently serves as the Commander of the Court Security Division.
Jim has been dedicated to his community for several years. From 1995 to 2004, Jim was a member of the Active 20-30 Club of Sacramento #1 which is a community service organization for young adults. Jim is currently a member of the Rotary Club of Historic Folsom.
Jim Ortega received his Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice Management from CSU, Sacramento and a Master of Science in Emergency Services Administration from CSU, Long Beach. Jim is a graduate of the POST Supervisory Leadership Institute and the FBI National Academy.
Jim is married to Susan and they have two children.
We invite the public to meet Chief Ortega at his Swearing in Ceremony to be held on Tuesday, April 25th from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm, at Town Hall, 549 Main Street, Placerville. The Ceremony will take place at 2:30.
We welcome Chief Ortega to the City of Placerville and look forward to his leadership in the Placerville Police Department.
