"My mother's 'Papa' Samuel Gerken was a Jewish Accountant for the Italian Family in Chicago. He was the chief accountant for "The Developer" for the enlargement of Cicero Ill in the '20s. That redevelopment tripled the size of the [then] township of Cicero [Oak Park]. My mother grew up in the "Developer's" house when "Papa" bought it from the "Developer" after the development was finished. She went to Garvy Street school with the Mellon "girls" [Bank] at the time.
I visited my Grandmother in that big house on Nagle many times.
"Papa" died of a heart attack in the late '50s in the basement of his home in Cicero. The Jews that were murdered in the Holocaust [Shoah] was a terrible event in our family, and many others around the World.
My mother went to 202 Garvy School in 6th grade in 1948, 201 Garvy School 7th grade in '49, Garvy School 8th grade in 1951 (I do not have a school picture of '50).
Like many Chicago girls she spent some of her teen years on Skates serving White Castel burgers. She took me to a place she work at as a teen, a soda fountain. She pointed at the wall and said, "That is where it happened, on the other side of that wall" as she discreetly pointed to the wall behind me. I asked, "What happened?" She said, "The Saint Valentine's Day Massacre." I was surprised. On several occasions she took me to fine Italian restaurants she knew as a child. I saw some Very Strang things and every time I said something her reply was fast and curt, "Shut up and look away!"
My Grandmother was very curt and serious! Not so long ago I saw and Voter's Guide on her table so I asked her if she was voting them. She said, "Yes!"
I asked why she was voting for the top of the ticket, Bill Clinton? She about snapped my head off with a "Of Course I Am!" But I pressed her, the last time I did that. "Why" I dared to ask? Then she got cross with me. "Why would I do anything else? If I have a pothole I just call my Alderman and it is taken care of the next day. I call the alderman and it is fixed. Why would I vote for anyone else then who he tells me?" I had met the "Mayor Daley Chicago "'Machine'" and I was trying to NOT get incinerated by her blazing stare. I learned not to question my grandmother that day!
