Newly minted El Dorado County Poet Laureate Suzanne Roberts will start her tour of the county on October 24, 2018, at 5:30 pm at the Placerville Library. Over the course of her two-year tenure Roberts will visit each El Dorado County Library bringing readings, workshops, and other poetry-related events to its respective community. At each stop she will invite local poets to join in the program and finish up with Open Mic sessions for those who come out to the events and are inspired to share their work.
The Placerville stop will include a free workshop with Roberts as well as selected readings from local poet and member of Red Foxes Underground Moira Magneson, and former El Dorado County Poet Laureate (2016-2018) Taylor Graham. Magneson is an accomplished writer whose work has appeared in such publications as Spillway, Sierra Nevada Review and Tule Review. Graham, Poet Laureate Emerita, and prolific author is widely published both in anthologies and personal collections, notably she appears in the anthology, California Poetry: from the Gold Rush to the Present. A collection of Graham's official works as Poet Laureate, Laureate Trail, A Collection of Works, Taylor Graham, is available on Amazon.
South Lake Tahoe poet, travel writer, and educator Suzanne Roberts was presented to the El Dorado County Board of Supervisors on August 14, by District 5 Supervisor Sue Novasel as the El Dorado County Poet Laureate for 2018 - 2020.
Roberts is the author of the award-winning memoir, Almost Somewhere (Bison Books, 2012), as well as four collections of poetry, most recently, Three Hours to Burn a Body: Poems on Travel.
"As a writer, I consider myself a storyteller, and sometimes the story I'm writing wants to be an essay; sometimes it wants to be a poem because there are times when only a poem will do," said Roberts.
She was named "The Next Great Travel Writer" by National Geographic's Traveler magazine, and her work has been published in many literary journals and magazines, including Creative Nonfiction, Brevity, River Teeth, Litro, and Zyzzyva. Suzanne holds a doctorate in Literature and the Environment from the University of Nevada-Reno and currently teaches at Lake Tahoe Community College and for the low-residency MFA program in Creative Writing at SNC-Tahoe. She lives in South Lake Tahoe.
Laureate Trail events will be held on Wednesdays at 5:30 pm and will begin at Placerville Public Library on October 24 at 5:30 pm. Other stops on the Trail will be in Cameron Park on April 17, 2019, El Dorado Hills on June 12, 2019, Georgetown on October 23, 2019, Pollock Pines on April 15, 2020, and South Lake Tahoe on June 17, 2020.
