[David Ashby, New Morning Youth & Family Services]
Annah's Story:
"I grew up in a household with two siblings and a parent who had extreme mental health and substance abuse issues. By the time I was 11 years old, I was a runaway, homeless youth living between park encampments, tweeker pads, highway 50 roadsides and 24-hour dinners. When I turned 13, I found New Morning's youth shelter. New Morning's shelter was the first place I can remember being treated with respect by my adult caretakers since I'd run away. It was at the shelter that I learned how to bond with other girls in my peer group, seeing them as allies for the first time instead of competitors. The shelter also encouraged my love of reading and writing-I learned that no matter how bad things got, I could disappear into the pages of a book or write my thoughts down in a journal. I now have a Master's degree in English, and my first book was published last year."
